Not an expert in DVD players, But it sounds like a scratched DVD or a weak laser. You could try buying and running a laser lens cleaner through it, as that will clean the laser and make it play better.
Also check if there is a firmware update for the DVD player.

Did you remember to write the file as data and not Video file.
Many people make that mistake. When you drop the avi files to write make the CD/DVD as a data CD.
It will work for sure.

Clean the laser lens it has been covered by dust. Use something like
you can buy one in every dvd shop.

You can reset the unit simply unplugging power cord for five minutes, but that may not fix the problem.

If you get picture in reddish tint, then you usually need to replace the component cable. This problem is typically given by a faulty cable.
