1. If your Sony DVD recorder player RDR-GX257's disc recorder has stopped working, don't despair! There are a few things you can try to get it up and running again. 2. First, check to see if the disc recorder is properly connected to your TV and to an electrical outlet. If everything is plugged in correctly, try pressing the "Reset" button on the back of the DVD recorder. 3. If the reset doesn't work, try unplugging the DVD recorder from the power outlet for a few minutes, then plug it back in. This sometimes clears any glitches that may be causing the problem. 4. If the DVD recorder still isn't working, it's possible that the disc itself is the problem. Try inserting a different disc into the player and see if it will play. check for a small pinhole in unit, this would be the emergency eject button, use an unbent paper clip and stick in hole, you should be able to retrieve dvd, however, the player may have to be sent into shop for repair..it will keep doing the same thing

After ending recording, Finalize recorded dvd as option is available in recorder menu.
a Finalized dvd will playback in other dvd players.

Your Sony DVD player has problem with either it laser pickup unit of with the strip wire connected from it to the main circuit board. You just replace the strip wire, which is flat cable connected from the laser picup unit, which has carbon tracks as conductors, and are easy to break. As this strio wire has to move along with the laser assembley, there is chance for the conductors to got break. This wire is locked at both ends with a sort of clip, that you can detect and loose it to detach. First replace this wore. Detach it from your player, and go with it as sample. Note the ends of it, some may be single sided, and the othere may be opposite sided. Before etaching the strip from player, make a marking at it end side, which have a blue end hardner attacted to it, so that when you replace it, you can make sure of its side.
If this does not help, there is no other way than replacing the Laser Picup Unit itsef. When replacing it, it is best for you to buy it as a whole assembly, which contains two motor too and will not cost too much more.

its a blank disc ..so how can it play back.. burn it with some data to play it..

I have the same problem. It works fine during setup and changes channels on my DirecTV receiver but does not change channels when programmed for a timed recording. I talked to a Sony Service Representative and they said to return it to Walmart and get another one, but I suspect I would encounter the same problem. I think their is a major design problem with the RDR-GX257. I would be curious to see if others are having the same problem.
