You have created button holes with this machine before or first time? I take that it ran the first stage, straight stitches, and stopped? If yes, its indicating it ran this first stitch series and determined there was no activation of the reversing lever. So it's advising what it believes are the actions necessary to correct the problem. So it needs to be determined whether the lever is engaging or not engaging the button hole foot. Suggest you try again and watch specifically how the button hole foot engages the reversing lever. May be a clue there as to why it has determined reverse lever not activated.

That is your upper tension. Rethread and make sure the presser foot is up. Then make sure the thread “seats” into the tension disks. When it’s right drop the presser foot and pull on the thread - if it’s tight, then you should be good to sew

Well, my first reaction is that the foot is defective. They are not very expensive; you can get one on eBay or Amazon. Your machine takes a low-shank foot. You might also decide to purchase one with a shank, instead of the snap-on that you have.

I just took a look at your user's manual (I recommend you go to the Singer site and download it--it's free), and on page 20, it says that the top button of the set of three buttons above the needle shaft is the needle up/down button. If you press it when the machine is NOT sewing, it will reset it to stopping with the needle UP instead of DOWN. In other words, it resets the needle's default position, but you must do that when it isn't sewing anything.

Have you taken the bobbin out and made sure there is nothing caught in the bobbin race area. Maybe even unscrew the plate and take the whole bobbin race assembly apart and clean well. Once that is done put back together then re thread machine. Next I would start by hand turning the machine and doing some stitches slowly with the fly wheel make sure to to forwards only never turn the fly wheel back wards. If everything seems clear give it some power slowly and see how it goes.

No I don't think it will. That attachment is for a 'Slant Shank' machine like a 301. The K on the Sewing machine model number simply means it was built in Scotland. That means it is basically the same as most other 201's.
