My TI-83 has the result that ln10E4 is 11.51 when it should be 9.2. Is there a different setting under MODE that I need to change?

The natural log of 10E4 is about 11.51. The natural log of 1E4 is about 9.21. Do you want the log of 10 to the fourth (ten thousand) or of 10 to the fifth (one hundred thousand)? What keys are you pressing to enter the argument? If you press 1 0 2ND EE 4 then you're inputting ten times ten to the fourth or ten to the fifth. If you want ten to the fourth, enter it as 1 2ND EE 4 .
