this can only be done in Multi line calculators.

First remove the six screws on the back cover. The top of the calculator will be still attached by three clips. Twist the calculator slightly to make the lower end of the gray part of the calculator pop up from the black base. Pry the base off by applying gentle pressure or by prying the sides outward. Be sure to short out the "reset" button after changing the batteries, by rubbing a coin over it.

The 30Xa doesn't work with complex numbers. You'll have to work with the real and imaginary components separately, just like they taught you in class.
