This usually always turns out to be a broken printhead. If it's under warranty (one year) get to an authorized service center and Brother will cover all the costs except your time and gas. Mono Start
Lets you start sending faxes or
make copies in black and white.

Remove the paper tray and shake all excess debris from it. Open all ports on the copier and rotate all cogs {gear wheels} by hand and watch for the smallest piece of paper in each corner. Get a can of compressed air and spray simultaneously as you spin the wheels. Make sure to unplug the unit before reaching inside to rotate gears. Turn copier upside down and shake any loose debris out. Close covers and replace paper tray. Plug in and try again.

If you replaced an ink cartridge while Near Empty was displayed on the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was
a brand new one. Example: Did You Change Blck? 1.Yes 2.No. For each new cartridge you installed, press 1 on the dial
pad to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the ink cartridge you installed is not a brand new one, please be sure to select 2.
WARNING
If ink gets in your eyes, irrigate them with water immediately and call a doctor if you are concerned.
If you wait until Ink Empty message is displayed on the LCD, the machine will automatically reset the ink dot counter.
If the Install message is on the display after you have installed ink cartridges, check that the ink cartridges are
installed properly.

Open the scanner cover and remove any foreign obstacles from inside the machine. If the error message continues, disconnect the machine from the power for several minutes then reconnect it. The machine's memory will
hold faxes for several hours, so you will not lose any important messages. If the error message

machine error 46 means that your printer's purge unit has reached its counter limit and needs replacing, the reason i say this is because your machine has done alot of work and parts will be warn in your m/c, if you just reset the counter you will end up with ink througout your machine, normally when your printer is up for a purge unit its better to get a new machine with new cartridges and a 12 month warranty and no wear.

Are you sure you are plugged into the LINE port of the fax machine?

Question edited for clarity. 985 or 895? Usually because the jam hasn't been cleared or the machine hasn't been reset. Remove the paper tray an open the cartridge bay. Open the rear paper door, check underneath. This machine has a lot of paper scraps in it. :>D
