Bernina 730 Can't open top cover !

The problem is that of a stuck piston detent on the pattern selector support that snaps the top cover closed.
  1. Open the light cover
  2. Apply pressure with thumbs on the bottom edge of the top cover on both the right and left sides of the cover. The cover should pop up...Too much pressure on the left side, (if this thing is really stuck) and you might break the top cover at the thread tension slot. Be careful here....
  3. Add a drop of acetone (fingernail polish remover) to the piston detent and work it free by pushing it back and forth. Avoid getting any acetone on the painted surfaces of the machine.
  4. Continue to work free, repeating with a few drops of acetone, and wipe clean. Don't oil this part. It was a petroleum product combined with a galvanic process (aluminum and steel) that caused the problem in the first place, not to mention age.
  5. Use DTE Heavy Medium oil rather than a white or clear oil when you lubricate your machine. White oils are unstable and will oxidize (decay) much more quickly. Also avoid 3 in 1 oil and stuff like WD40....very bad....
  6. Oil 1/2 a drop on those prescribed areas. Too much oil is more harmful than not enough....
  7. Contact your Bernina dealer for this oil.

Bernette 800D seized up

Please don't use WD40 on your sewing machine, WD40 is an alcohol based cleaner and will do the opposite of lubricate. Take your machine to a certified Bernina Repair shop, they will have a look at the timing and lubricate all of your gears. Lubricant will dry out over time, grease turns to putty and oils turn to varnish after several years of non-service. Lint is attracted to moisture, moisture being those key areas of any machine. Lint acts like an oil wick and will draw out your lubricant from key areas. It then begins to attract dust and other nasty things over the years to become grit. Your motor begins to burn out due to stress trying to move all of these clocked gears, cams and shafts. Take your machine in!

I recently got an older bernette 334 ds serger and it doesnt look like it hss ever been used. i went to plug it in and run it and nothing happened only light came on

If it's old and has never been run, it will need a proper service fro the parts that have become immobile due to the lubricant "gumming up". Off to the sewing machine shop for you!

Please could you tell me the age of the Bernina 1020 and the 1020

Find the serial number, engraved into the metal on the back of the machine or low down on the hand wheel end. First digit is the decade: 1=1970's, 2=1980's, 3=1990's Second digit is the year in the decade. E.g. my 1030 is 27230888 so it was made in 1987.

The bernette 82 e moves very slowly, what is the problem? How can I fix it?

Check the pedal if it is still ok. Get someone to measure the resistance as you push the pedal. Otherwise, the belt on your machine must be worn out and needs to be replaced. Likewise, check on your bobbin rewinding clutch if it is fully home to the normal position.

I have a Bernette 334d that I replaced a broken

Hi If the timing is out, to be honest, you need to get it done by someone who is experienced. It is not a simple job - there are many steps in the process and it must be done very accurately in order for it to function correctly. Timing a sewing machine is childs play in comparison. Cheers

My needle seems to be hitting the plate. I can't

it sounds like the machine needs a alignment or the timing could be off, it would be better to take the machine to a sewing machine repair shop, they have the tools to do the adjustments..
