What kind of oil do

Hi. Use only sewing machine oil on your sewing machine. You can get it at Jo-ann's, Hancocks, or other fabric/quilting shops--or order it online. Try nancysnotions.com--she has an excellent website. NEVER use WD-40 or 3-n-1 oil.

How often you need to oil your machine depends on how much you use it, but generally you'll need to do it for every 8 to 10 hours sewing time.

Check your manual for your machine's oiling ports, but the general rule of thumb is one drop of oil every place metal moves against metal. Don't use oil on any gears you find--use sewing machine grease instead. You can get it wherever sewing machine oil is found.

The most likely reason your thread is bunching up under the fabric is because your top tension is too loose. Here's how to adjust it:

1. Use a different color thread in the top and in the bobbin.
2. Use good-quality thread and a size 12 needle.
3. Hold the tails of the threads out behind the machine as you start sewing. Let go after a few stitches.
4. Sew a few inches and check your stitch. With the different colors, it's easy to see the loose top thread.
5. Tighten the upper tension just a bit.
6. Repeat--recheck--repeat--recheck
7. The tension is right when you don't see any (or very little) of the bobbin thread on top and you don't see any (or see very little) top thread on the underside.

Hope this helps!

It stopped picking up the bobbin thread while

Hello,

You can take the slide plate off, that your needle goes through and watch to see if the arm grabs the bobbin thread, if you can get it to pick up, than slide scissors or something flat under your needle and manually pull both threads through, replace the plate.

Your bobbin thread could be wound to tight or spliced threads on it, and your tension needs to be adjusted. If your using a pedal, try setting to a slower speed.

I would try a different bobbin and thread it manually as in the step I mentioned, if you can't see the arm grabbing it, you will need to check to see if you have loose threading jammed in youir machine, if this isn't the case and adjusting the tension dosen't help...than you will need to replace the bobbin casing.

Kind regards!

Is there a dial on the right above the flywheel? This is where you adjust the stitch length on most sergers. It might be numbered from 0 to 5 or 4.

If it has differential feed, there would be a dial there for this too, possibly under the stitch length knob - it would have numbers like -1, -0.5, 0, 0.5 and 1 on it.

If you are new to sergers/overlockers I highly recommend a class, demonstration or investing in a good book to get you started as they are not like sewing machines and many of the techniques are best demonstrated such as rolled thread edging and flat lock seams.

I've borrowed he Singer book "Sewing with an overlocker", or "Serge with Confidence" by Nancy Zieman from my library but there would be other titles too.

Hate to say it but it could be a timing issue, and you need a professional to look at it. If, you know that you have the right size bobbin in and it is facing the right way, according to your manual, then it is most likely your timing.
