Try to print an alignment page or self test page to confirm the printing operation of the printer. If still nothing it may need a cleaning.

Have you installed the printer drivers? Is the printer power turned on before plugging the USB cable into the computer? You could have a bad cable. Try a different cable.

If your color ink is already empty or not substantial for printing, then you must replace it with a new cartridge. The Lexmark printer will continue to print when there's substantial ink in the cartridges.
If you prefer to print in black and white as your default print setting, please follow the steps below: (make sure your black and color cartridges ink levels are good)

For Windows OS:

1. Go to Control Panel.

2. Open Printers and Faxes.

3. Right-click on Lexmark 3600-4600 Series print object and click on Properties.

4. In the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Properties window, go to Advanced tab. Click on Printing Defaults.

5. In the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Printing Preferences window, under Ink Use, select Print using black ink only. Click OK.

6. Click OK button in the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Properties window to save the changes.

Your printer will print in black and white draft mode the next time you send a print job to the printer.

For Mac OS:

1. With the file (you wish to print) open, go to Print. A window will pop up.

2. Select the Lexmark printer.

3. Expand the arrow pointing down beside printer name if you're not able to see other options for printing. Look for Quality and Media.

4. Under Paper tab, select Print in Black and White.

5. Save this as your default print setting. Click Presets option and choose Save as. You can personalize the name for this default print setting (e.g. Black and White Draft or My Setting).

Select this Preset name every time you print your files/documents.

i had same issue, even after updating drivers from web site.

I solved it by downloading adobe reader, rebooting pc,then(and this is very important)unplugging the printer,AND the router for about 1min.

When i started the scan again,i selected the "scan to adobe reader"option. It all works fine,im thinking of leaving the printer unplugged from the mains till i use it,and the wireless router of course.I have a lexmark all in one x4690.

Alignment problems happens if the cartridge is defective. Try to replace the cartridge and make sure that it's a genuine Lexmark cartridge.

You can also try to reseat the cartridge and clean the contacts.

Make sure the Lexmark X4690 scan software is already installed on your computer. You can insert the install disk that came with your printer to install the Lexmark OCR scan software used for scanning documents to your computer.
For the instructions on how to scan, you can refer the Lexmark X4690 user's guide which can be accessed (on Windows) by going to the Start menu -> Programs -> Lexmark X4600 Series -> User's Guide. Scroll to page 87 for the instructions on how to scan.
You can also download the Lexmark X4600 Series User's Guide for free using this link.
I hope this information has been helpful. Thanks.

Leading cause of paper jams and misfeeds is debris / foreign objects that accidentally fell into the paper feed area. Please try this approach to fix the problem:

  1. Remove the sheets of paper from the feeder.
  2. Grab a flashlight and look inside the feeder for any debris or foreign objects.
  3. If you're willing and physically able, you may also carefully turn the printer over. Any debris should just freely roll out from the feeder.
  4. If feeder is clear, place the printer on the table. Open the printer cover and remove the cartridges.
  5. Check the cartridge area for any obstructions in the paper path.
  6. Close the printer cover.
  7. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - the black box where the power cord is plugged into. Re-plug after 30 seconds.
  8. When the printer turns on, reinsert the cartridges and load some paper. Try to print again to verify that the problem is fixed.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC.
It could also be that your printer is positioned too far from your wireless router/network. Make sure your printer is placed where it receives excellent wireless signal strength (avoid physical obstructions whenever possible).

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Frequently, issues are caused simply by a break in the signal sent from PC to printer or vice versa. Unplugging and re-plugging the printer allows the small amount of on-board memory on the printer to be cleared, with the result that the PC recognizes the machine properly. Programs continuing to run in the background of the operating system (OS) can cause the signal to be lost. Rebooting the PC ends all programs that may be running and makes a 'clean' start, allowing the signal to be detected.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer (if USB-connected). Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer (if USB-connected). Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.
