I am assuming the operating system is Windows Vista ? Windows has a mechanism that detects the hardware on your computer and will most likely get upset that it has been copied onto another P.C. Most Windows O/S on Laptops are OEM licensed which means that if the P.C is non working the licence stays with the now non working p.c. suggest trying to recover crashed hard drive from hidden recovery partition http://gateway-us.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/34866/session/L3RpbWUvMTUxNjIyOTk0OS9zaWQvZlVldDZ6MDR5YTczZzNHSWI1aCU3RVZIeER6ZENWdmMxRzVjV0dOVkNfaWRJZTV1MU9KMXBOWkw2cEpfb2N5JTdFM0NHSmJSWW8zdThoSGs4RnNUQzQyWUVLcGhhUDA1bTZEVE1jRm1yREtLaFZrVGI0RnV5clQ2UU9ZZyUyMSUyMQ%3D%3D then try getting a recovery cd for your particular serial number and model number from http://www.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/contact-support to use on your new hard drive

Gateway user guides are available at Gateway's web site. You need your compters information to access it. Looks like a power supply issue.

Restore factory settings

Try to get into the BIOS using either F2 , F1 , F8 , or F10 when it starts to load .Once there , check it's boot sequence to make sure the hard drive was not removed from the load list . If it was , change it to be the first boot device , save , and then restart .

Gateway Laptop(MODEL M-6750): The power button

Does it do this when it is plugged in? Try to power it up with no battery, and see if it acts differently, it may be a battery issue unsure. Is the computer working normally except for this problem?

My Gateway M 6750 Laptop powers on goes into bios

It is possible there is what is called a "root kit" virus on this system. You may have to take it into a computer shop. Alternatively, if you are a computer guru; insert the cd for the operating system. On the 6750 ; that comes with Windows XP. Go to the "recovery console" and then issue the command "Fixbook /mbr" which will rewrite the boot record; and solve the problem. Hope that helps, and best of luck.

Start the computer and it

The user settings are corrupted. Try to boot in Safe Mode and in there disable all programs that are loaded at boot.
If you can't boot in Safe Mode then the corruption is too great to fix, you will have to reinstall. If you need to recover/backup your files then , before reinstalling, boot with a Linux Live-CD and copy them.

I can get the disk tray open.

Is the drive being recognized in windows? If not at all then it may need to be replaced as it has totally died on you.

On the drive door there will be a pin sized hole. This is the 'emergency' release. You insert a paper clip or a pin and it releases the catch and the door will pop open. Do with with the power OFF. If that won't open the door then it is probably jammed or siezed. At this point you would have to pry it open which can cause damage to the drive if done too roughly. If you have something like a sticker or say two cd's in the drive then once you get it starting to open the trick is to firmly but gently and evenly pull on the sides of the door and then the body. Usually they will fight up to a point then open. When you get it open make sure you find and clear or clean the cause. The next time you have to open it may not go as easy.

If you need to replace the drive that is covered under warrenty or can be purchased third party for about $80 and up for a new drive.

The issue probably may be power supply related. You can try removing the Battery and connect the Computer to direct power outlet. Reseat the RAM modules before sending to service depot

I can not see my desktop its too dim

The backlight in your display has gone out. Usually this is due to a bad inverter, although sometimes the lamp itself goes bad.

Replacing the inverter is fairly easy. It's a small circuit board at the bottom of the display. Remove the display bezel, unplug a couple of cables, put the replacement inverter board in and reassemble. There are several sources for inverters. eBay is a good place to start; here's a sale going on now.

Replacing the backlight itself is much more difficult (it's built into the display), and it's usually easier to replace the entire display panel. Again there are several sources with prices in the range of $110 to $150.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!
