Hi,
There are two possible causes for this problem, either back light inverter board stop working thus screen goes black as lcd screen needs back light to show its image OR if sound remains while screen goes black then it seems firmware issue.
Let me know is it Insignia NS-LCD42HD tv or any other model?
Do you get sound in tv while no picture?
Does screen show any on-screen display when tv lose picture?
Above info will help me to diagnose problem in tv and to suggest some solution.
Thanks.

T.V keeps shutting itself off
it may be due to overheating, ensure proper ventilation, clean the ventilation grill, may be the psu is not functioning properly and being over heated, if the tv starts normally after few mins then its the case of overheating.

Color went bad
That looks like a loose cable to the LCD controller. Next time it goes bad gently tap on the sides of the screen and see if the video becomes normal. If it does then its confirmed that its caused due to a loose contact. Slowly unplug the LVDS cable from the LCD controller board and plug it back in. Make sure you do not touch anything else. Also turn off the tv and unplug from the power supply before you begin.

Can you get a signal without cable or a converter
Yes,if ur tv is a LCD or a Plasma tvs.It have the tuner inside already it will recieve the digital tv free air brocast.Must have a good antena though like a roof antena,or a digital inside antena. To get excellent signal. So it would cut in and out the broscast of the free digital signal.

Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. From what
you have described it seems that you
might have a backlight and/or an inverter board issue with this TV set. It
could also be due to the inverter circuits for the backlights. The
inverter is the power supply source for the backlights. There could
also be a screen driver problem; if it is then you have to change the entire inverter
board. All this is only recommended if you have some kind of expertise for
checking the internal circuitry of the TV as these units have high voltages
running even when the set is switched off. The cost to change the inverter
board including labor would be around $250, if you get this done by a
professional. Please do accept the solution if the issue is
resolved or post a comment for further assistance.
Thanks

My remote won't work. How can I fix it?
Hello. Begin by removing the batteries and using the eraser end of a pencil to clean the contacts inside the remote. Then install the batteries making sure that the polarity is correct [the + and the -]. If that doesn't solve the problem, the remote may just be worn out. If so replace it with a universal remote, from Walmart or Radio Shack. Joe

Audio, but no picture. Second try at fixing this.
If you can hold a flashlight up to the screen and see the picture, then the only thing that is not working is the inverter.
If the inverter connector on the main controller board has DC voltage, then the only thing that may be faulty is either the inverter or the wiring to the inverter.
If there is no DC voltage to the connector, only in that case you may have a faulty PSU or a faulty main controller board.
There is not much to play around , parts must be tested, and the faulty one replaced. All the technician must do is following voltage from main board connector to inverter, or backward to PSU, depending if there is voltage on main board connector to inverter or not.
Also ensure that all the connectors are in place, and check connection between slave and master inverter board.
If there is no voltage on main controller, then test bridging the +5V control line from main board to PSU that turns on voltage to the inverter. If bridging the line the inverter turns on, then the main controller board is bad.
All test and repairing must be done by a trained person.

I have an Insignia 42"
This line you have mentioned suggests that its an issue with the video driver board, also called t-con board or timing control board. However we need to confirm.. Turn on the set darken the room and see if you notice a dull glow on the screen.
Please post back with your observation so that we can continue with the diagnosis.

I currently have a 42
Look up both Tv's model numbers on the internet and you should be able to find a manual for each. Look at the part numbers in the manuals for each stand and see if they are the same. I'm guessing they are different but you might get lucky.

NS-LCD42HD-09 Insignia. The power light is on, but
At least the 5VDC stand by power supply is working, there will be a control signal pin from the mainboard to the power supply board to turn on the rest of the power supplies (24vdc for the back light inverter boards, 12vdc for other circuits). Any bulging caps in the power supply?

The clock won't keep time!!!
The problem is with the set. Within the eprom there is an address and register setting for the clock adjustment. I don't know of anyone who has the service info to reprogram it. I sympathize with you on this issue, however, I know you meant well in purchasing an Insignia but they are one of the worse sets on the market today. I repair these 10/1 over all the other brands each day. No television will run for long with the input voltage to high. They have a regulated power supply that keeps all the necessary voltage on target. If your voltage is 10 to 15 volts higher ( 130-140 ac) that set wouldn't play for 5 minutes before the power supply would blow. All the geeks had to do was measure your outlet for 120 volts ac with a meter and solve that problem in 10 seconds. Your going to have to fight with the retailer and get the distributors name who sells them the product. Let me know what you come up with, and if nothing happens I'll need your full Model and Serial number to do my own investigation.
