Remote receiver doesn't fit

I am installing a Hampton Bay model 740 154 Mediterranean ceiling fan /light and it seems that the remote control receiver, which is supposed to be hidden in the canopy, is too large to fit. Any suggestions?

ok since you have the power off move ceiling fan box electrical box over place remote above the electrical box with the antenna sticking out replace fan power up you might have to go into attic to place the remote sensor and antenna down to outside of fan i had the same problem myself i made a cut in drywall ceiling big enough for sensor unit let the antenna hang out placed up there

i used a wall plate cut in half to match the hole i just made or you dry wall back up but if remote goes out theres now no way to get to sensor unit
little cut in drywall place sensor threw antenna hang down put plate over hole

humming how to oil?

Answer

The fan does not need to be oiled. The bearings are what manufacturers described as "permanently-sealed", which means that they're designed such that they don't require oiling. The manufacturers recommend against oiling, and if you really wanted to do it, you'd have to be an expert, because there is some very complex disassembly to be done, which requires specialized tools.

HOWEVER...

The problem is not related to oil. A lack of oil does not produce a hum. If a fan's bearings are low on oil, the sound generated is a scraping or brushing sound. A hum, on the other hand, is an electrical sound. All fan motors hum to some degree -- the cheap made-in-China ones, like in your Hampton Bay fan, hum more than others. There are some steps you can take to reduce the hum:

* If you are using the fan with a solid-state control (i.e. a dimmer), that will cause the fan to hum. These controls are dangerous when used with fans, and a fire can result. You should have a qualified person remove the switch immediately and replace it with either a regular on/off switch OR a discrete-speed (i.e. 3-speed or 4-speed, rather than variable-dimmer) switch. Specially-designed ceiling fan switches such as this are available at your local Home Depot or Lowes. You could also use a remote-control system.

* If you have a remote control or other speed control system, make sure that the pull-chain speed control on the fan is set to the "high" position (highest speed possible) and left there.

* Make sure that all the screws are tight -- this includes screws which hold up the fan's mounting bracket, hold the blades onto the fan, and hold any applicable glass onto the light kit.

* Even if you don't have a speed control, the motor will still produce an electrical hum -- and the blades, which are physically attached to the motor, serve as mechanical amplifiers -- they take the tiny electrical hum and amplify it just like the big brass funnel speaker on an antique gramophone (record player) takes the tiny vibrations of the needle on the record and amplifies them to a comfortably audible level. High-end fans have a rubber flywheel attached to the motor between the blade holders and the motor unit -- and since rubber doesn't transmit vibrations well, this effectively deadens the sound. Your fan doesn't have one of these, but you can effectively replicate the noise-dampening effect by putting rubber washers between where the blade holders touch the bottom of the motor AND between where the screws which hold the blade holders onto the motor, meet the blade holders themselves. This will completely remove the path along which the sound vibrations can flow to the blades, and thus your hum will stop.

I hope this helps you! If you have any other questions, or need clarification, please ask!

hampton bay altura 68

fan is running three speeds in reverse and none forward. When the reverse button on the remote is depressed and the fan is not moving nothing happens. When the reverse button is depressed while the fan is running (in reverse) the motor stops and starts several times but never reverses direction. I have checked the wiring connections several times and all were made in accordance with the directions. I connected the fan without the remote and it still ran in reverse.

Read this on another thread - apparently the solution came from HB's tech support.
Turn the fan speed to HI and then select Reverse.  You should hear a "click" and see the fan reverse direction.  It seems that the reversing relay only works when the fan speed is set to HI.
Good Luck!!

I have looked online and even went to HomeDepot and asked them for help. No one knows how to get at the light bulb. There are no tiny screws to remove. No knob at the base of the globe. The globe itself doesnt budge even when sprayed with wd40. I dont know if I am going to have to just break the globe off or if I am missing something. The model number on the fan only said 48TP. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

hi there i can help. There is a "dip switch" on nearly all fan remote units, much like a garage door opener has. To keep all the fans in your home from operating at one time, each fan needs a seperate "code". To use your other remote, you need to locate the receiver unit in the fan, usually in the "canopy". This is the bowl looking piece against the ceiling. then note the "code" which is the position of the switches. For instance, most have a block with 4 switches, and if the first is "on", and the remaining are "off", that is it's set code. This "code" can be changed to any combination of "on , off" that you like. BUT, you must also open the remote control and set it's switch to the exact same "Code", or order of "on off" as your Fan receiver. (Usually the control "Dip switch" is in the battery compartment.

i need a replacement part for a rhine pl-190B

this part does not work

Answer

A PL-190B ceiling fan module is is a Wattage Limiter rated at 190W maximum. It is about 1" square and has a red, blue and white factory wired into the fan's light circuit in most cases. The AC power to the lights is run through the module to "ensure" no one puts more than 190W (about 2 amps)of light bulbs through the circuit for "safety" reasons. So four 60w bulbs and some CFLs will trip the module. These wattage limiters are sometimes feeding the fan motor in addition to the lights, however the units I have seen just control the "blue wire" going to the lights.
Some suggest simply cutting it out and splice the blue and red wires (or blue and blue) that are left in the fan after removing out the module. If the module has two whites, wirenut them together separately. Otherwise just insulate or cap the single white.
At that point your ceiling fan and lights are like all others made before 2005 and depend on the circuit breaker and you to only use four 40w bulbs max in the fan. As indicated, some low wattage CFLs will also trip the module. Some internet sources have the PL-190B available for around $15.
