I have an old Vornado
Hello Johnsbrandt - I had the exact problem. As you note, the four slits are they key. They are tabs that hold the outer ring in place. Press them so that they no longer catch on the back ring, and you should be able to slide the outer ring right off. The outer ring on mine was somehow catching on the blade, plus it was dirty, so it was good to get this off. Hope this helps! Lance

I HAVE A Vornado Type
There are three clips the hold the grill to the cowl.
One clip at 11 o'clock, one at 2 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock.
Use a flat blade screw driver to push the 11 and 2 positions down (do 11 then do 2) and the grill shold come off.
I can send pic if needed.

How do you remove the grill on a type 633 Vornado fan.
Our Model 633 has both screws and clips. I first undid the screws at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions on the back of the grill, then used a flat blade screwdriver to open the clips at 10 and 2 o'clock positions. Then it came apart pretty easily. On this mode there are also clips at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions, but they let go once you pull the top apart.

HOW DOES THE SPRING RESEAT FROM BASE TO FAN ON VORNADO 750?
If the spring has a long tang and a short tang, the short tang goes under the clip that holds it down and the long tang goes between the stand and the back of the cowl. Tell me the model and I can send a pic of one assembled. Here is an image of a newer model 750 with the spring correctly installed.

Fan won't run at all.
If you plug it in and turn it on, does it "humm".
If so, it is getting power. It could be the blades are stuck on something: do they turn by hand?
The motor could be dirty also, is the blade hard to turn?
It can be repaired by Vornado, or you can dis-assemble the motor and clean it.

Motor stopped
hi,
you can try and oil it, unplug it and begin taking it apart, your destination is the fan motor, dust around the motor and I would recommend using regular automotive 10w30 motor oil on that motor, put some in a small bowl and use a small baster or equivalent and oil around both ends of the motor shaft(where it protrudes from the motor) behind the fan blades and behind it, look closely with a flashlight where the motor attatches to the back guard. try get some oil in there and within the motor housing to the inner bearing areas if possible. My guess is that its sealed from the factory, but you can try, those fans are the best on the market and have a long warranty, heres a link to the manual

Fan sweaks, is it a bearing?
Vornado makes several fan models. Whether yours has ball bearings, sleeve bearings or another type is unknown. Most manufacturers of consumer grade fans use "permanently lubricated bearings" and require no additional lubrication by the owner "for the life of the fan".If yours does accept lubrication, you should find a "filler neck" at the front and rear of the motor housing - directly over the motor's shaft (that the fan blade is attached to). A few drops of a light bodied machine oil in each should quiet the squeaking sounds (if coming from the bearing). If there is no such filler neck on the fan, you could unplug the fan and rest it on its back - fan aimed straight up. Squirt a couple drops of oil on the shaft - close to the motor. Because the fan is pointed straight up, gravity will draw the oil down the shaft into the bearing. You may not be able to access the shaft at the rear of the motor without some dis-assembly however. You should not attempt dis-assembly if you're not sure how to go about it. After the oil has run into the bearing, you should spread out newspaper or rags under the fan(or better yet - brought outside - before powering it on, as some oil may be cast off the shaft if it spins fast enough or if there was an excessive amount of oil applied to the shaft.I hope this helps & good luck!

Blade is loose
on the inner part of the motor [fan side] look for an external snap ring and a fiber spacer. the armature fits all the way into the rear part of the housing, the other housing goes over the motor shaft and must press against the snap ring and fiber washer.
