Hi Wilson.

If the phone displays out of range even when near to the base, try the following:

  • Disconnect all power adapter cables from wall sockets.
  • Remove all handsets from cradles.
  • Remove all battery from cradles.
  • Fit back the batteries in their handsets.
  • Place back handsets in their cradles.
  • Connect power cables.

The procedure above will reset the system and will re-sync handset (or handsets) to cradle. I wrote at plural because the phone system may have more than one cradle/handset.
If that does not work, then the phone is defective.In that case you will need to replace/repair the faulty handset or the whole system.

If there is no reception, then the internal contact to antenna may be defective, either in cradle or handset (both have internal antenna). In that case contact Motorola support - Here Live Chat

Hello Carl,

This is a common problem for MD761. At random times the base station goes insane and all the handsets say "out of range" and stop working. The only thing that fixes it is unplugging the base station and taking out its batteries, putting it all back together (the battery compartment is poorly designed and the batteries don't want to stay in), and reprogramming the current date/time (which is also tedious). Then the handsets all work again.

You need to reset the time after a power outage.  Press the Day/Check, Hour, and Minute buttons until the correct time is heard-- Press Day/Check until you hear the correct day announced. Then do the same with Hour, and then Minute.

this is a battery prob replacing battery will solve this prob hope this solves your prob make sure the battery connectors are conected propery securely first before replacing if ok then replace batt and prob should be solved check then conectors are clean where the phone sits on base and check phone sit on base properly if it does then it is def the batt replace.

Try unplugging all telephone (including the base unit), then try to call the number again. If there is still a busy signal, then the problem is with your telephone line/connection and you need to call your phone provider. On the other hand if the number rings, then chances are that base unit is defective (or one of your other phones physically connected to the tel line.).

To verify that it is the base unit or one of the other wired telephones,  reconnect them one by one and determine which of them will cause the busy signal. Problems like this can be caused by a power surge, near lightning strike or a simple component failure.

If it is the base unit, it is very likely an electronic problem and therefore would require familiarity with components and circuitry diagnosis, soldering and use of a DVM. Perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified phone technician.

Open this link; go to the FAQ's for an MD760/MD761 and it solved my similar problem for my phone. Primarily, you will be resetting your system (almost like rebooting) and if necessary, deregister and follow with registering. I did not have to do the last part (deregister), but it does work. on the handsets, use the menu until you find register. It's pretty easy from there.
