20 Most Recent HP Officejet J4680 InkJet Printer Questions & Answers

Based on encouragement from olsnake above, I fixed it easily. It definitely WAS the encoder wheel (a thin clear plastic disk printed
with timing marks) on the left side of the paper-feed roller, as you look at it from the front. This wheel provides motion feedback to the paper feed control software. If the disk is detached/loose, the device thinks the paper feed roller is stuck or impeded, and thus gives the annoying error.

What I did:
1) Remove the scanner assembly (it comes off with a few screws, and is a totally separate unit; The printer works with it completely disconnected (after it complains that the scanner is malfunctioning). Beware that you don't break off the little control panel. Or you can be safe and remove the one screw holding it on, by prying off the 'HP OfficeJet...One" plastic cover.

2) Once you have removed the scanner assembly:
at the left side you will see three white plastic gears meshed together; the farthest one is covered in a circular black
plastic cover. With some care you CAN remove this cover without any additional screwdriver work.

3) in my case (and most others I bet) the thin disk was detached from the gear to which it should be attached. I just shoved it back on, so it was tightly mated to its white gear. You should also ensure that the clear disk goes through the optical sensor at the bottom (mine was).

4) I did not bother to replace that cover, if you can do it, good for you.

5) Test, and reassemble.

This is about the WORST product engineering imaginable. But I have a working printer again!

As you press the keys it will cycle thru the small letters first then the capital of the same letters then numbers just take your time and you will get it to go to the numbers.

Hi,

Please install the printer software and try to scan via the installed software from the computer. Or, start scan using scan button from printer; after installing software.

with wireless device and open wifi networks the settings or addresses to each device may change to allow other equipment on that address to function ,
Suggest the easiest method is to make sure the printer is set to DHCP under the network setting/TCP IP - AUTO
this done Un Install tyhe printer and then Re Install and have the installation program do all the leg work for you,
once set and your happy that your printing, take a config print page from the printer make a note of the tcp ip address and now set the printer from AUTO DHCP to Manual, double check to see if the address is the same ( usually uses last known good settings )
this should stop future instances of IP Jumping

It is not necessary to buy another cartridge my friend, you can repair it. let me show you how... just take a towel paper, pour some water on and slide the cartridge slowly on, repeat this action 3 times and then slide the cartridge on another towel paper without water slowly and get the cartridge back in the printer.
good luck

This usually happens if you just replace your inkjet cartridge with a refill.

You must replace it with original inkjet cartridge.

the official solution, which probably won't work since you did most if not all of it already: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01818839&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3645097#N636

the unofficial solution, which will be more likely to work: http://www.land.netonecom.net/tlp/ref/letters/hpPrinters.php

perhaps the worst thing about HP is that they do not even mention the chip timeouts in their troubleshooting instructions.

If you have reinstalled the software what to do is open up the hp utility which is located in the applications folder and then the Hewlett Packard folder from this application you can then choose under fax settings the fax logs button and this will show you the fax logs for the printer. Hope this helps. The link to the HP software is at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=219&lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3692888#N201
