You can use key combinations to start up the computer in either single-user mode or verbose mode. These may be used for troubleshooting or software development.Starting up in single-user or verbose mode
1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command key and one of the following:

Sadly enough there's no other way to get back into your installation. If you need to backup your data, either boot into windows with the bootcamp drivers installed or take out your hard drive and plug it into a pc. Once you have a backup completely shut down your macbook and plug it in. Press and hold CMD+R and turn the Macbook on, it should now boot into recovery, where you can format and reinstall OS X.

check to see if you spilled liquid on your keyboard. are the keys sticky that is a sure sign of juice of coffee spill
Just installed a HS12YHA in a MacBook Air rev a
new drives need to be formatted when purchased (incase you didn't do that, just covering bases)
in the case that you have done that, and it still won't be recognized it might be worth getting an external enclosure for the new drive (the HS12YHA) in the enclosure and format it as an external if that is an option.
if that's not an option booting off of the copy of the OS X install and attempting to repair the disk and verify its permissions might solve the problem as well. Running certain utilities such as Disc Warrior will locate bad blocks (if any) which can also signify if the drive is no longer functioning.
If the drive clicks or doesn't make any signs of turning on at all such as not showing up at all in Disk Utility when booting off install DVD or from another copy of the OS, it may be DOA and need to be sent back for RMA processing.
However from my findings, it looks like the HS12YHA is a PATA hard drive where as the macbook air uses a SATA style hard drive. So it could be possible you were shipped the wrong hard drive.
hopefully that helps
good luck
My mac volume does not work and programs are
Was it working before? If yes then what was installed on the machine last. If not then have you tried plugging in headphones and check if you can hear anything. Try to qiggle it in the jack itself, blow in air. This might sounds silly but it does work. If still nothing try calling apple and have their technicians have a look at it.
See how you go.
Please rate if helpful.
Thanks

Hi Daniel
Try this. Make sure your boot CD/DVD is in the drive and switch off the computer - hold down the power button until it goes off completely - it takes 7 to 10 seconds.
Then restart the mac but immediately press and hold the alt key (or option key - the one next to the key with the pretzel on it)
After a moment or two you should get a blue screen with the spinning pizza. After about another 10 seconds or so you should get an icon of your HD and an icon for the CD/DVD
If you only get the CD/DVD then your HD has a problem. If your get neither then you had best take it to a service centre as there is something more seriously wrong.
Assuming you get the CD/DVD icon click on it then press the big arrow that should also be there (NOT the bendy arrow - that means Go back)
The computer should then start up from the CD/DVD. Once you get the Install screen come up, go to the menu bar and find 'Disk Utility'.
This will take over and you can run the first aid routine IF the utility can actually see your HD. With luck it will and will sort it out. then quit the utility and restart the computer and see what happens.
If on the other hand you didn't get anywhere, or disk utility gave you a failure message, then you need some more aggressive software like DiskWarrior or Drive Genius. They are both very good at restoring misbehaving or non-mounting HDs.
On the more black side, Apple unfortunately managed to fit a batch of bad HDs to some macbooks. These were made by Seagate. They ran beautifully for about a year and then failed catastrophically. Apple replaced these drive without question but unfortunately the data on them was completely lost. One of my clients send their drive to Ontrack who returned it saying that no recovery was possible.
So be prepard for the worst.
Laptop not starting up
Plug it in and if it won't start its not the battery. A dead battery won't stop your computer from starting when its plugged in. You can even take the battery out and then plug it in
I dropped my mac lap top and the screen is a bit fuzzy, how can I fix it?
Thank for contacting Fixya, I will be glad to assist you. You cannot, without having a diagnostics performed by a certified Apple technician or Apple Authorized Service Provider. You may have damaged the video graphics card on the main logic board of your MacbookMacbook Pro.Unless you have knowledge on how to go in and physically troubleshoot this geniune hardware issue, I would recommend you do you to your local Apple retail store Genius bar, or Apple Authorized Service center near you and have your Macbook looked at.Just for your reference, I have taken the liberty to provide the store locator links to your local Apple Retail store as well as a general store locator for locating any local Apple Authorized Service center in your area.
Apple Retail Store(Genius bar - need to set appointment via this website link, if planning on visiting Apple store of choice in your immediate area)
Apple Authorized Service ProviderYou don't want to keep turning on the Macbook until you have it checked because it could affect more than just the video graphics card.Regards,-The MacTechTrainer.
