check the BIOS version, if there is an update for it on the gateway site apply it. a checksum error in CMOS BIOS cannot be overcome and you will always have to deal with this issue if no bios updates are available. There is a slim chance that you can revert back to an earlier version.

this laptop can take 4G ram http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Gateway-memory/M-1000+Series/M-1625-upgrades.html

if the memory modules are not from the same brand range, this can often be the issue.

it SHOULD be able to run with just 1 2G module but will run better with 2 1G rather than the single, assuming it's the right type for the machine.

If I'm upgrading pc memory, I remove the old and replace with Crucial or Kingston kits so as not to mix brands and ranges.

You can turn on your laptop first and then put the disk in the driver. It seems your laptop is set to start from the disk, and if you do as I said above it should not effect it

Why would one wish to do that?
Go to Control Panel, then to Device Manager. Find pointing device and double click it. Now dissable the driver.
Re booting your Notebook will start it up again as it will look to refresh the driver.

Do you have the adapter plugged in? if yes then make sure it is working.
Take out the battery and try using the laptop with just the adapter, and vice versa.
If neither works, try a different adapter.
If that does not help then there is a hardware issue with the laptop, you will need a technician.

the hardest part generally is opening the chassis first thing you want to do is figure out what cpu are compatible the next would be to buy the best thermal paste you can buy and last make sure you dont try to force the cpu into the socket all and all if you have replaced a cpu in a desktop than its not that bad

Start taking your laptop apart piece by piece and test it after each removed component:
1. Remove the hard drive and test the laptop.
2. Remove the DVD drive and test the laptop.
3. Remove the wireless card and test the laptop.
4. Unplug the display panel from the motherboard/video card and test the laptop.
etc....
Continue taking it apart until you have only three major components connected: motherboard (with video card), processor, and memory. If you still experience the same problem, most likely it's bad motherboard.
By the way, before you start, try reconnecting the memory module. If you have two modules installed, try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each one separately.
