The battery is not charging
If you have a little voltmeter, check to see if charger is putting out 20v DC. If not,try another battery?
If second battery does same thing, then it would be the charger.

If the jaws are open enough to get a screwdriver down through the center so that you can remove the retaining screw then you are in luck, just take it out and then put a pair of vise grips on the chuck and with the chuck pointed away from you and the vise grips to the right, hit the vise grips downward quickly to release it.It should then just spin off by hand.If you can't get at the retaining screw then put lots of penetrating oil around the jaws and after a short time tap them in until they are even and then they should open, give it a try, you've got nothing to loose!

If you have short bits, put about 1/2 of it into the chuck. If you have long bits (about 2 inches long), put about 1/2 inch of it into the chuck.
Be aware that when the drill runs in reverse, the chuck tends to loosen and when that happens, your bit will fall out.
If Hubby has a bit holder, I'd suggest you use that and place the bit into the bit holder. Makes for a better reach.
Good luck on your project.

If all else fails there are companies who will refurbish the battery of a cordless tool and make it better than it was when new if desired and ebay presents another possibility.
You could of course repair or refurbish the battery yourself. The various types of cell are available from Amazon and ebay as well as specialist suppliers (some with solder tags that don't need welding) and youtube has plenty of helpful how to videos.
