First thing to try is a fluid and filter change, also check the suction screan[it can be found in the suction tube].If all are good and the results change nothing then you need to take the rock-shaft off and put a seal kit in it.
Not getting spark all the time after putting new
Clean the points with an emery board if this doesn't fix it roll the motor until the points are open then short them with a screwdriver if it arcs see if the coil is putting out spark if not get a new coil
My 1949 8N Ford tractor, the starter just spins
My thought is you need a new "bendix" for lack of a better word. The device I speak of spins out and connects with the flywheel. There is the possibility you have electric problems but based on what you say, I think it is mechanical.

Hi..my name is Keith..and i restore 9N's,2N's and 8N's....and to replace the ring gear..you split it there at the back of the engine..and its kind of a big job..so i would check the starter 1st..to make sure its not a starter problem..i hope this helps..if not please write back..i love tractor problems
Need to replace 9n tractor starter
I suggest that you pull the starter and make sure the bendix unit isn't stuck on the shaft which may be rusted or dirty and corroded first. If the starter spins then the starter itself is probably okay. Hope this helps you
Ford 4000 starter only works when I hit it with a
the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...
Firing order for 1963 FORD 2N 163 TRACTOR
As there can realistically be only 2 firing orders for a 4 cylinder engine then it will be one of these two.
1-2-4-3
1-3-4-2
I am 95% sure that on your Ford it will be 1-2-4-3. So give that a try and if it is incorrect then you know it it 1-3-4-2.
Runs with choke on but pitters out when i take
Will it idle ok or is it not running at higher rpm?
First......take the gas line off at the carb and check for a good flow of fuel to the carb.No flow means ...check for blockage at the tank glass bowl filter....take the glass off and open the gas valve....any flow?......if not unscrew the glass bowl assembly and clean that filter screen......you will need your wife to hold her finger over the hole on the tank while you check that screen, get a snack and a drink.
If flow was good to the carb .....try turning the main jet out a few turns (the bigger of the two jet adjusters) (they usually have a place for a flat screwdriver slot in them)The small one is idle mixture.
If that does not do it......there is a small screen filter where the fuel line goes into the carb....unscrew that and check for dirt.
TIP.DO NOT BLOW AIR THROUGH THE JETS THE CLEAR THEM ON THIS CARB.You will compress the float.
If the above didn't do it......
This carb is VERY simple to work on.
Get a carb kit then dissasemble it and clean every hole and passage you can find....install the kit and It will run well for years.
Replacing 8N starter motor
IT helps to loosen the oil canister ahead of the starter and then begin inserting the starter with it tipped upwards and then gradally lift it as you insert it.
The hole should be oblonged out to make for easier insertion of the starter shart..
good luck.

Cuts out and then quits. In about 10-15 min. will start again.
I think that cooling off is doing it,I think your gas is filling you carb bowl, remove you carb and take bowl off ,I would buy a kit,I have had problem with the floats sticking or have been damaged by water freezeing, that carb is easy to rebuid you will do good and you will have the pride of fixing it ,good luck and thanks
Ford 8N 1949 cannot start no spark
Hi I am Vortash this sounds like a spark gap problem at the distributor points or maybe a fault in the ignition switch .. but the voltage regulator would only regulate the power coming from the dynamo to the battery and as long as the battery is charging then it is ok I would check the following ... Points gap for a fourstroke engine of the age you say I would have thought no less than 12- no mre than 18 thou .. check the distributor rotor arm and cap are connecting properly ..sometimes the carbon connection sticks and doesn't touch the rotor strip , make sure the rotor arm end is not carbonised .. check there are no breaks in the contact breaker wire .. run a wire direct from the battery to the coil and distributor bypassing the ignition switch and see if it starts then proving a switch fault ..hope this helps regards vortash
