nothing to take apart on this one it's a mag drive pump , if somehow the housing requires cleaning , backflushing down the outlet pipe is about the only way to do it , unit is sealed otherwise

mag drive means that a magnet is used to couple pump to motor so a direct connection is not needed so no drive shaft seals to fail , mag drives should never never be run dry with low to no water in pond , they use the water for cooling and will fail beyond repair if allowed to melt

this sounds as if motor is overheating and the thermal switch is stopping it (why it restarts by itself) if a pump is overheating then a few reasons need be looked at , is pump encountering higher viscosity's than designed for and is having trouble moving liquid fast enough , is distance pump has to lift liquid over what it's designed to do most of these pumps use liquid it's moving to provide cooling to pump , is liquid it's moving warm/Hot allready if so use different type of pump (non submerged) and last but not least is pump worn out and is failing moving parts wearing together make heat !!! ?

this sure sounds if the impeller is blocked and not being able to turn ,Dont let it run this way , can dammage motor of pump , remove intake cover (unplugged) and wash out with garden hose real well , see if impeller (black plastic blade) can turn with your finger (unplugged) , should move easy ! this might be an indacation of need for a filter on pump inlet !!!

thats why i like the little giant pumps they are put together with phillips screws not glued like them other guys , i do suggest that if you dissasemble pump and water has gotten inside , replace it not just seal it up and go , wont last long as that means the pump shaft seal has leaked , ther e has been a few folks that add dietary mineral oil to the inside , for use in very deep ponds (over 3 feet) they believe that helps keep the water out

I used flexible wire to stick in the tubing to get any dirt out close to opening, put clorox in a dropper and put in one end of tubing to let it drain through and a bicycle pump to push air/debris out. Took awhile but finally worked!

Hello.
It sounds like the impeller bearing has become contaminated. It is common for plastic type pumps to develop this problem, and unfortunately to replace the pump section from the motor is usually the same cost as a completely new unit. You can attempt to pull the pump away from the motor yourself, and soak the bearing with marine grease, but this is a lot of work for a short time fix, but be careful as 4 year old plastics can be brittle and it is very easy to snap vital parts.
I hope this helps Regards GM

Pump motor is overheating or drawing too much current and the safety is shutting the motor down. After a period, it automatically kicks back in (quite common). Replace motor (and safety which probably comes with, or is actually contained inside motor).
:o).

You will have to replace the pump. These pumps are only given a three year warranty from the manufacture and it would be cheaper to replace it then to rebuild it
