Works on propane but not
Check at back of water heater where hydro wires go in to heater, there is usually a black switch on top or side of that box/cover that needs to be in proper position as well. I usually use a mirror so I can see for sure it's in the on position.
Electronic burner lights then goes out in a few seconds
I am not sure about your particular heater but the thermocouple on a full-size gas water heater is often the cause of a pilot failing. It is relatively inexpensive to change (or mine was). It is a simple metal tube with a wire that is located near the pilot to tell the burner that it is ok to come on because the pilot is lit.

Sounds like some adjustments are needed. Air shutter for one, and ignitor/electrode. Have you by chance observed outside with cover open when it tries to re-light? My guess is that it is sparking/trying to ignite, but adjustments are needed for proper ignition. A good cleaning of burner tube, electrode, and proper adjustment of electrode & air mixture should cure your problem.
What Atwood water heater models will replace model GCH6A-9E?
Any 6 gal will fit in same cut-out (hole) . 12-5/8" H x 16-1/4" W x 17-5/8 deep. In order to move up to a 10 gal, you need to be able to cut hole a little bigger. 15-3/4" H x 16-1/4" W x 20-5/8" deep. Usually your depth will allow , and width is same, just a matter of whether you have room to make height bigger.
Will not ignite
gas valve will not turn on if the blower is not pushing air thru the combustion camber. There is a sail switch in there that has to be working to complete the circuit back to the gas valve. BE CAREFUL and ck for a bee or wasp nest in the exhaust pipe or back in the combustion camber.
