You have to be in "VFO" mode. Your best bet on that extremely difficult to use radio, is to get "chirp" and the proper cable and program it via a computer. If you search on-line for "baofeng programming" you may find an alternate set of instructions. Your absolute best bet: throw that PoS away and get a Yaesu FT-60.

I has to be for a baofeng because it is different from my older ham radio mics.

In most things I get biofeedback telling me I have either screwed something on correctly, or that I know it's cross-threaded. I know from the feel as I make the connection. With my UV5R+ and its charger stand, I really don't know if it's sitting in the charger stand and making contact -- unless I see the light turn solid red. That means it's charging. I have set it in place and it slipped right in, making the light go red. And I have set it ip place, jiggled it and set it again, and have slammed it in, all without success It is of a very poor design. That may be your problem, you have it "cross-threaded" and don't know it. Have you ever seen the battery charger show Red? I don't know if my experience is a one-of-a-kind or if it is widespread. Now, if you do get around the design flaw I have described and the charger does go red, your battery may be faulty. it's not charging.

you have to make sure the programming cable is fully seated into teh radio & the computer recognizes the com port that teh cable is plugged into

Can you hit MENU (opens the menu) 24 and MENU (opens menu item 24, Auto-lock) 0 and MENU (sets auto-lock off and confirms) EXIT Auto-Lock locks up the keyboard to prevent accidental frequency changes. It allows for transmission with the PTT.

Hi Jimmy,Since you have the software/drivers the problem is solved by installing same to your PC/notebook HD, once the installation is complete, you can go to the directory where you installed the software and open it, there you will find all the files and drivers. now you need to open the manual, usually in PDF format, and open it, read through it carefully to understand how your radio works, then you'll come to the section about programming your radio with frequencies, both TX and RX. follow the steps described and write down the relevant steps. Connect your radio via the cable to PC and voila! you're almost an expert. It's all about learning.Note: some software once installed will go into a setup wizard which will do what I've written, automagically.Cheers,Peter
