The solenoid on carb was bad causing reduced gas to motor and low power

Motorcycles are usually fitted with a permanent magnet rotor type alternator that supplies a 3 phase alternating current to a combined rectifier/regulator, the DC output of which should be sufficient to charge the battery and supply enough current to power all the ancillary equipment.

A fully charged 12 volt battery in good health has a terminal voltage of 13.2 and the output of the regulator should be in excess of that or half for six volt systems.

Some motorcycle systems can be remarkably complex so it is best to use a wiring diagram to aid understanding. Motorcycle batteries won't tolerate a sustained high rate of charge so some systems provide a reduced supply until the headlamp is switched on - just one of the many possible complications that could be encountered with motorcycle electrical systems, ballasted rear lights is another...

Check batt voltage, start then disconnect batt. connect voltmeter between pos. cale and battery voltage should read 12.6 and then 13.6 when testing voltage.

Sounds like your valves are sticking, possibly bent w/piston damage.

Your choke is stuck

If there is a check valve in the breather it may be stuck. However this is usually indicative of broken rings or burned pistons(piston) . Compression bypasses rings and pistons causing excess crankcase pressure and oil spillage.

It will give you a bit more service. However one should also replace bearings in crank and rod. I would purchase a new 6 hp from harbor freight for $100 BUCKS.

I think you have the rocker arm clearance set wrong on the one that you worked on.

Is the choke staying on perhaps? check spark and plug check airflow, get compression test maybe the oil/compression rings giving way... sounds like its getting hot and increasing fuel flow for some reason??? perhaps clean carb with some cleaner while running (remove air cleaner) spray directly into carby while running run at full throttle as you spray it will try and die ... relax on the spraying and see how it goes.. check air cleaner for blockages as the same time :) hope you get it working!

The float and needle valve in your carburetor are not working as they should. The float should force the needle valve into the carburetor body to stop the flow of gas when the float bowl is full. When the float and needle valve do not work as they should, the gasoline keeps flowing into the float bowl and into the carburetor, and into the cylinder where it flows past the piston rings and into the crank case.
The carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned.

bad wire or coil

Briggs &... | Answered on Feb 15, 2015 | 233 views

How long did it take to do this job..did you clean the the carb first...then the oil or vise versa...the reason I as is ma y if these motors are equipped with an electric valve on the carb that go bad or stuck allowing the gas to continue flowing after shut down eventually in the intake valves and into the crankcase...causing smoke and high crankcase pressure and out the carb and use changing it WILL happen again..the fix is simple put an inline gas shut off and shut it off if only shut down for minutes...happened to my 18 horse Briggs...just shut it off every time you turn the engine off..Hope this helps..good luck..
