Hi ! I have the same mower. It is an older machine and possibly the belt that drives the mower is worn. The belt drive is spring loaded and when you engage the mower by lowering the lever, aspring pulls the deck backwards against the blade. If the belt hasn't been replaced in a while, I would start with that first.

Most Mower engines have an oil drain plug located at the base of the oil fill tube or dip stick tube, Most mower engines use a standard 30wt engine oil, however, to stay within the parameters of your warranty, use the manufacturers reccommended oil, this info can be located in your owners manuel.

adjust the carby. also u might want to replace the diaphragm in the carby. might work wonders

the lift spring is the spring that attaches to the deck handle that lifts the deck up and down. i can see in the manual where to attach one side, but it does not give detail where to attach the small side. The lift assist spring will connect from the lever base connect point to the very rear of the tractor

You might want to look for any broken gears where the chute pivots and anything that might be bent not allowing for any total movement. Plus check to see if the gears are making contact.

make sure the vent in the gas cap isnt plugged up. test by loosening it a bit to see if it cures your problem

sounds like the drive belts may be wore out and need replaced. also the tension pulleys may be binding. clean and spray some lubrication spray on them that may help some.

Dont know the exact lash for the MTD OHV engine but most small engines of this type will work just fine with both intake and exhaust at 0.006 inches. Make adjustment with piston at TDC compression stroke.
