I'm not positive about this, but I seem to recall that these type of clocks have two "silence levers" on the movement. These levers are located at the upper left and upper right corners of the movement as you face the movement from the back. The movement back panel has to be removed if it has one.

If the levers are pushed toward the chime rods, they will silence the hour or musical chime, depending on which one it is. I believe the silence levers are supposed to be moved away from the chime rods so the rods can retract and then strike the chime bars.

Hi,

The movement in this Elgin is made by Citizen. After you change the battery, you need to reset the hands so that the watch functions properly. Select chronograph function with lower-right button. Then pull-out the same button. Push the upper left button to select the UTC, hour, and minute hands. Then use lower-left and upper-right buttons to make sure everything is aligned to 12:00 position. After setting the hands to 12:00, push in lower right button. Now you can set the time by selecting the SET using the lower right button. Pull out the same button and choose your time zone to set. Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

Its possible your watch is running but the hands arent moving. You should take it to a reputable watch repair shop instead of Walmart...they are sales people and havent been trained to repair watches. No its not THAT hard to change a battery, but if you dont know much about the movement then you can miss simple things that go wrong. Or something could get damaged during the battery change! A watch repair shop should have machines that can help diagnose the problem. Could be as simple as needing to be oiled!

Good luck!

You have a vintage watch, Elgin ceased production in the '60s
Inquire in your town who are the most competent watchmakers, and ask them if they can do it

Might be a silly answer, but have you tried the thee Elgin site? Also try a Dollar store. They have some very small batteries that I use for my older watches. :-)
