Try unplugging your toaster and turn it upside down and lightly tap on the casing to see if you can remove any butnt bread particles. This may clear catch that holds toaster down while it's heating. If this does not help then you can remove casing and see if there is something else stopping the catch from engaging. You may have to replace catch if it is just worn out.
It is always a judgement call anymore but you may be better off just getting a new one as the price of parts and shipping quite often meet or exceed new. Best of luck and thank you.
