you can actually check for leaks yourself all it takes is a pair of yellow lens glasses and an ultra violet light and that kit is available from most quality tool supply shops putting glasses on and turning on the light reveals any leak as a green spots or green areas and hoses or fittings that have a oily dust around them are also leak indicators I see that there is now a leak fixing additive that can be added to the gas ( don;t know how effective it would be ) however for the price quoted for the evaporator ( requires removing the dash ) you could for an extra $500 get a completely new system including evaporator , compressor and condenser and drier and hoses The point is that when doing ac work , only deal with accredited ac specialists shops and not local garages or auto electricians
