The trike uses a band brake, refer pages 25 and 26 of the user manual http://www.schwinnbikes.com/media/uploads/blog/files/Schwinn-Meridian-Manual_Mar2011.pdf The Schwinn dealer should have a replacement in stock or be able to order one in for you. You may also be able to purchase one from eBay if you measure what size you need.

Replace wheel with a quick release wheel or just bring correct wrench with you. Wing nut would need to be very big to get proper torque to hold wheel correctly

Replace the wheel or take it to a bike shop to compare repair vs. replace

The wheel should only be held on by a two nuts. The first one is visible and the second one is holding the bearing s in place. Remove both of those nut, pull out the broken or missing bearing, grease the new bearing and remount the wheel.

Posts could be different sizes. Should be able to just replace it with a longer bolt if in fact it is just not reaching.

I assume that this bike normally has a coaster brake. If so, your coaster brake mechanism (inside the hub of the drive wheel) is jammed or broken. You will have to disasssemble the wheel hub. This bike might have a coaster brake on both rear wheels or maybe just one side. Lift both rear wheels off the ground and turn them independently to determine which side the problem is on.

Are there teeth on the front and rear sprocket ..

Its best to use a rachet and socet 5/8 I think .turn the bike over ans put wrench or socket on the nut and turn counter clock wise and that should loosen it enough for you to slide the wheel out of the groove,.intsall is reverse of taking off

is the bolt metric?

you need a new axle kit, and a cog removal tool. They used to be a Huret dearailleur if I remember right. I know a varsity never had Shimano. I think you may be better off buying a new rear wheel (it is usually less money than having to rebuild the axle) and let the bike shop do the change over, it is well worth it. You wont have to deal with the brakes,check the cones etc. Why did you have the Meridian adult trike on, and you have an old 10 speed Varsity? Kind of confusing.
