Usually when you remove the hose from the swivel base and try to attach the new hose the attachment is usually not tight enough therefore the suction is always low. It is better for you to purchase the swivel head parts to enable you enjoy the use of the vacuum more. If you simply replace the hose then there is a probability that the connection might not be so airtight therefore suction becomes low and the vacuum's effectiveness would be poor. So simply get the swivel head and if possible get one already attached to a hose.

Broken power head belt
Not sure which one you have, need complete model number. You can go tosears.com, click on the parts link, enter you model number, click on the powerehead link. A parts list will come up along with a picture breakdown of it.
Alot of them the part covering the light is just snapped into place, push in on the side andback to release it. Remove the 2 screws, use a flatblade and stick in the slot on each side from the bottom and pry up to release it.
The other type, you tak out the 2 screws from the bottom, then on the back and each side are release tabs that you pry out to release.
Brush motor doesnt work
The cord at the bottom of the power head neck may be bad. But so could the plug connections in the hose handle, and the cord on the wand. Check both ends of the wand and make sure that the plug ends aren't burnt, if they are replace them and maybe the plug inside the hose handle.
Retractable cord
I'm assuming that you have bought the new retractable cord assembly. If you have so, I believe the cord should retract going counter-clock wise (pulling it makes it spin clockwise).
On/off switch needs repair
you don't have to repair the switch. your vac may have a relay inside the canister which may be defective

Light and brush roll stopped working on Kenmore cannister
There is a connector somewhere in the bottom that will have gotten debris and stuff in it. Unplug the power first then clean it all contact pins that transfer power. Compressed air works the best but the effect can be gained by using a toothpick. Clearing out the connectors should restore the power to the head. If one or the other stops then its a different problem. This seems to be a full failure in the elements of the head that require power. DO NOT WORK ON ANYTHING STILL PLUGGED IN!!!
