How do i completely erase laptop back to factory settings

well HP.com , heard of them. well do what they told you in your free manual.. I guess you lost the OS install disks. Is PC dead now or Password locked or bitlocker enabled?
  1. hp.com
  2. tell them your full service tag info now., they ask.
  3. see you support page matching EXACT model PC
  4. see the manual
  5. RTM read the manual
  6. see chapter called RECOVERY it is all there all ways.
  7. Also if using w10 free upgrade did you , all above is useless.
  8. W10 has and internal reset, told at Microsoft.com
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/recovery-options-in-windows-31ce2444-7de3-818c-d626-e3b5a3024da5 click line marked RESET your PC and read, HP has 3 recovers for OS reload, 1: the disk in the box day one new. lost? 2: the chapter told you to make the disk and did not day1. 3: some HP have recovery partition but of w10 was he upgade then doing this will regress the PC to w7. or 8 and fails. last , buy w10 and install it or don't buy it and install w10 and run in,no personal setting mode for ever like vast folks so. now. no problem told at all, like PC dead, or HDD is dead and HDD fails S.M.A.R .T tests or the HP diagnostics fail for HDD.

I have an hp pavilion dv5 laptop. When I push the

Yes most all PC's can be "Fixed" it is just a case of parts and money. http://www.retrevo.com/support/HP-DV5-1140-Laptops-manual/id/23082bh634/t/2/
Above your user manual below your service and repair manual.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf
Try this below it may work? Above is your user manual, below is your Service and repair manual. Please perform the troubleshooting steps and you should soon be able to isolate and repair your PC.
Ok perform a system restore, press F8 at bootup and choose safe mode desktop, when you are asked if you want the safe mode desktop or system restore, choose restore, and when ask if you want restore or desktop choose restore, restore to a time BEFORE the driver up date and follow instructions and reboot, you should be back where you were.Or start up in safe mode desktop, at desktop, go device manager and "Roll back" the driver. reboot, should be OK

You will have to troubleshoot and find out where the fault is. Here is what I do….. First, check the Power is ON, cable is OK and IN PC, Then open PC up, and remove all power connections from everything EXCEPT the Motherboard Connector.(s) (Remember where they go, draw a diagram etc) Power the computer up, and does it switch on? NO, Then, remove the RAM, does it Boot up? YES Faulty RAM, replace. If it still does NOT then your Power Supply Unit is probably Faulty.(But it may be the motherboard) either way we need to test more with a known good power supply. With know good PSU, plug this one into the Motherboard Connection(s). Does it work, YES. Problem Solved. OK back to Frst: Because it DID go the PSU WAS OK, The MB was OK & the RAM was OK, Now then we plug in each of the other Items, DVD Hard Drive, etc, etc. One-at-a-time, until we find the one that stops the PSU. (It has protection and will "Shutdown in event of a fault") The one that stops the PSU is your culprit, replace whatever it is.

Hiya guys,

Ok. Then you can Factory Restore your PC. Doing this, as you very well know, will remove all data and put your PC in a state which it was in when you bought it.
  1. Restart your PC(or turn it on)
  2. Fit F11(or anything that relates to recovery)
  3. Cancel the AutoDetect if it starts up
  4. When you land on the screen with a window that has quite a few options in it, look for one that reads Factory Restore/Recovery.
  5. Choose the option and wait for your PC to be restored.
This option is automated and really quick.
When you log in to your windows again, check if it is possible to make a recovery disc. If so, please get one done. This will help if your recovery partition goes for a toss. Let me know if you need more detail or help. If your problem is resolved, please rate.

Need a recovery disc for Pavilion dv-5 notebook

Hi:
You most likely have a bad hard drive, and a disk set is not going to help you, though you will need it too.
What you need is a new hard drive, a copy of all the drivers for your laptop, which you can download for free from HP. If HP won't send you a copy of the recovery disk, you can use any OEM copy of the same operating system that your laptop has a sticker for, but you won't have all of your programs.

Overheating

It just could be in an enviroment that is too hot. Try using the laptop on a cool flat surface that does not block the vents in any way while in use. If the problem still persists you have 2 options, 1. Upgrade to a better heatsink/fan unit, or 2. Spend $20-30 on one of those laptop cooling pads and use it whenever you use the laptop. Hope this helps.
