I am replacing the single

Joan, In the box where you are placing the switch, you should have three pairs of wires. Each pair should have a black wire and a white wire (plus each pair should have a bare ground wire). One pair of wires goes out to the bedroom entry. Another pair goes out to the closet light. The third pair should be coming from your electric panel and provides the power - this is the hot pair. First determine which pair is the hot pair. If you don't have a meter or tester, you can temporarily connect each pair in turn to a lamp and turn on the power. Repeat until you find the pair coming from the panel. Turn off the power. Now take note of the four screws on the switch. Two of the screws on one side may have a small metal bar connecting the two screws together. With the power off, connect the black hot wire to one of these two screws. If there is no metal bar you will have to use a short jumper wire between two screws on one side of the switch to connect them together. Connect one other black wire to either screw on the other side of the switch. Connect the last black wire to the last screw. (There is also probably a green screw by itself. Connect one of the ground wires to this, and wrap the other two ground wires tightly around the ground wire you connected to the green screw.) Now connect all three white wires together (not to the switch) with a wire nut. Install the switch in the box and turn on the power. Please vote if you found this helpful. Good luck, and be safe, Al K

I dont know if this went anywhere the first time

It sounds like the outside light may have been wired differently from what you may have thought.

You may need Sparkie to come and comb it through for you. You did not mention what happened to the other switched curcuit that you eliminated.

Lights wire in one of several ways, and the most common run power to the light and then on to the switch. in this configuration, the white neutral wire should be taped black, as it carries hot power during use. This wiring configuration may not allow you to have a power plug as you describe, as there may not be full time power in the switch box.

the other most common is power comes to the switch and then on to the light. this is much less commonly used.

I am trying to replace a 1 toggle switch along

I specialize in wiring devices and timers.
You are adding a new light.
You need to wire a switch to the new light.
The existing box has a switch and receptacle.

Here's where I am confused:
I am uncertain if the original switch and receptacle are a single device.
Of if you have separate switch and separate receptacle?

And then:
What kind of device are you adding, a single switch?
Are you replacing the receptacle with a switch?
Or are you installing a double switch as shown below?
Add a comment and tell me the devices you are working with and the color of the screws on sides of each devices and I will get it wired correctly for you.

The double toggle switch shown above has brass screws on one side and silver screws on the other side.
The brass screws are connected by a brass plate.
The silver screws on the other side of the device are separate.
The hot wire connects to the brass screw.
The outdoor light connects to one of the silver screws.
The new light connects to the other silver screw.

I have a 1-pole toggle

1st thing you need to do is wire nut the white wires together. Then you need to wire nut the ground wires together. Once that is done then you can push them into the box.

Now you will need to find the hot wire that is the one that supplies the power to the box. To do this you need a tester like on the link below.

Once you have found the hot wire you will need to attach it to the switch the side that has the gold screws.

The other two wires takes the power to the fan and light. You will need to find the one that runs the light and put it on the top screw on the other side of the switch. The last wire you will put on the bottom screw on the same side of the switch that you put the light wire.

Wire from breaker to a dual switches on same

Wire from the breaker goes to the LINE side with the break-off tie connecting the two screw terminals on that side (common feed). The light "HOT" and fan "HOT" wires will be connected to the LOAD side of the switch. If the neutral (white) wires are present in this box, they should be joined together (wirenut). I prefer connecting the light to the upper switch terminal and the fan to the lower switch terminal since the light is an outside light and I presume that the switch is located next to a door or entry.

Cannot get power to fan

You should have three screws. The two screws the same color are for the switch legs going out. The odd colored screw should be for power in.

Wiring a switch to operate a plug

Use the identified screw (different color then the other two) and any one of the other two. I do not know what switch you have but I assume the two identecial screws are on the same side. Put the one with the wire down, then hopefully when the switch if moved up it will turn or, if backwards just rotate the switch.
