I have a General Electric timer on my water

1) GE timers don't have override switch, but if you raise all the timer segments, the circuit to water heater will be completed.

2) Open link below to identify timer and see wiring diagram, and wiring instructions.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-GE-15207-timer.html

3) Override timer using the wires:
Take a photo of wiring so you can re-wire correctly on new timer.
There is 1 black and 1 white Line wire coming from the breaker.
And 1 black and 1 white Load wire going to water heater.

Connect black Line and Load wires together on same terminal.
Connect white Line and Load wires together on same terminal.
This will complete circuit to water heater and by-pass the timer.

4) Buy new timer at Home Depot.
Reconnect wires on new timer.
Return defective timer in new box.
Keep new timer clean, and swap out whenever needed and give yourself extended warranty.

5) This is the first report of GE timer going bad that I've seen on Fixya.

Add a comment for more free help.
Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on timer or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

I have a new GE

http://waterheatertimer.org/images/GE-15306-wiring-250.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15306

GE 15306 is a version of 120Volt Tork 1101 indoor-outdoor timer sold at Home Depot under GE name and number.

You have 2 cables.
One cable comes from Breaker box, and other cable goes to Load (light, fan, motor, pump).
Each cable has black and white wire.
1) Cable from breaker box: Black wire H Hot connects to to terminal L.
Notice there is a metal bridge that connects terminal L and terminal 1.
If metal bridge is missing, use a jumper wire and connect L and 1.
White N Neutral from breaker box connects to terminal X.
2) Cable going to Load:
Black connects to terminal 2
White connects to terminal X.
So both white wires are on terminal X.

My GE 15132 was operating fine for a year but now

Contact Jasco and tell them what you said here.
http://www.jascoproducts.com/contactus/index.asp

Although GE has made high-quality timers for many years, the 15000 series box timers have been on the mass market for a year or so, and there are no replacement parts like available for Intermatic timers.
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html

I tested the GE series and found them to be cheaply made with moveable plastic parts and lightweight overall.

How to install timer switch

Open following link to identify timer and see wiring instructions.
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html

GE has a lot of different number for similar-looking timers without any clear way to tell difference.
Add a comment and say if this timer has dip switches, and what screw terminals appear on the wiring block.

GE Indoor Outdoor Timer #

1) If analog dial keeps time, I can only guess that OFF tripper is not in position correctly, or tripper is worn or defective, or that manual override lever is defective. Trippers are made of softer metal so they wear down before other parts of timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/GE%2015306%20Mechanical%20Outdoor%20Box%20Timer-24%20Hour.jpg
2) Buy Tork P47 trippers to replace GE 15306 trippers
http://waterheatertimer.org/Tork-timers-and-manuals.html#Trippers

3) Open following link for GE timer resources:
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15306

4) 15306 is heavy-duty indoor-outdoor version of Tork 1800 series or 7200 series 120Volt analog timer that is sold online and at Home Depot under GE brand name.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Tork-1800-600.jpg

5) You can buy new timer at Home Depot and return defective one in new package.

6) The on and off trippers are attached to the analog dial.
Dial rotates as time passes.
Trippers make physical contact with the manual override lever. The ON tripper pushes lever one direction and the OFF tripper moves lever other direction.
The override lever rotates a cam located on back of timer that opens and closes electrical contacts.
