You will have to buy a new lock once the "smartkey" locks up its toast. Very bad design unlike the traditional kwikset pin tumbler lock which can be repaired if something like this were to happen but hardly ever does.

I'm assuming you are dealing with the Powerbolt, since you didn't mention the model of lock you have. This problem is probably because the "handedness" of the door is set opposite of your installation. That is, you may have what is called a "right-hand door" and the lock is set for a left-hand door, or vice versa. In other words, what side the door hinges are on and which way it therefore swings open.The Kwikset lock has an internal jumper which needs to be moved to another position to change the function.

11. Door handing: I have installed your Powerbolt, but when I push the Lock Button, it unlocks? What should I do?
First remove the cover on the inside of the Powerbolt unit. On the right hand side under the batteries, you will notice that is says "Door Direction Jumper". If the cap is mounted on Prongs 1 & 2, carefully remove it and move it over so that it mounts Prongs 2 & 3. A is right handed, B is left handed.

Get a big scredriver and put it in the square in the middle of the mechanism and turn it till it opens, or you will just have to pry it out with the scredriver.

Wiggle the backset a few times while pulling on one side or the other. Certain brans have a catch and will opnly release when this is done.

I have had this with kwikset systems before. When this happens the lock will eventually fail and become none working. The lock is damaged and cost to repair is not worth the time or money becasue these sets are very cheap and can be found at most Ace hardware or local hardware stores. Also some walmart's carry these as well.

The best solution, cheapest and less headache causing is to replace this lock with a new one. I know some peopel liek to buy sets so their deadbolt and knob are the same and kwikset does provide this setup as well. Typical price for a kwikset deadbolt only is about 15-20$USD.

this problem is caused mostly by the latch it self failing ( starting to fail ). if you remove the handle(s) from the door I am sure that you will find that the plastic part of the latch has cracked,bound or broken all together. this could have been caused when whoever at the factory put the door hardware on the door and force fit the latch through the hole.
also -- if you do not see any visible issues with the latch - try and take the handle part that has the shaft on it and insert it thru the latch body and turn up and down on the handle and look to see if you can see the latch binding in anyway ( on the top or bottom of the hole ).
there is also a chance that the backset is set wrong on the latch -- this again was set wrong by the person that installed it at the factory,, and it is very common.
if this is a broken latch issue -- if you take the broken latch to 'Home Depo' and show this to them I am sure that they will be able to replace it for you. if they turn you away - just go to your local locksmith shop and show them what you need,, they should have lots of them ( I know we do at our shop and we sell them for $8.50 ).

On the inside on the cover plate behind the handle there will be two screws or the cover plate it's self will spin off to expose the screws....
If the cover plate needs to be removed to get to the screws you may have a hard time getting the cover to spin and turn to remove it...get something sticky like a rubber pad and use it to turn the cover CCW...
Once you get into the screws...remove them and then the whole lock assembly will just pull apart....be caref ul to observe how it comes apart so you can get it back to gether again...

You need to take it back off Pull the knobs removing the shaft from the plunger. put the knob with the shaft back in and turn the knob to see it turn in the plunger. sure the doors going to close if it's locked but not being able to turn the knob will not pull the plunger back the lock just stoppes the knob from turning. The knob that has the shaft in it has the two rods that the screws go into these rods go thouhg the holes for them in the plunger not over and under the plunger as you may have done which will cause this problem. You may have the offset set wrong for your door and the holes don't line up. with the shaft out the punger can be set to short and long as needed and if you drilled the door yourself and didn't get it right it won't line up on either setting.

Doors often sag downward just from use and gravity. This causes a misalignment of the bolt and the keeper (hole the deadbolt goes into) causing binding and dragging whenever you lock or unlock. You are correct that leaving this unfixed will quickly damage the lockset and be much more expensive to fix. A solution to the immediate problem is to lower the keeper to match where the deadbolt lines up. If you are semi-handy with tools you can probably do this yourself.
Extend the deadbolt with the door open. Push it against the door casing and mark above and below it with pencil. You should be able to "eyeball" it and see the problem by lining up the marks with the keeper. Unscrew the metal keeper from the jamb. Transfer the marks as close as possible from the casing to the jamb (surface where the keeper was). You will need to fill the old screw holes with wood because, when you remount the keeper, the new holes will be close to the old ones. You can use a sharpened popsicle stick, matchstick, toothpicks - whatever - to do this. Best to use glue. Tap them in fairly tight then break or cut the sticks level with the surface. Reposition your keeper vertically to match your pencil marks and screw it back to the jamb. Hold it in place in the new position and mark the screw holes then make a pilot hole for the screws with a nail. [Be careful not to change its position horizontally or the door won't close right] You may also have to remove some wood from the bottom of the hole behind the keeper where the deadbolt rests when locked. Easiest with a hammer and chisel but can be done with a good knife or drill and determination. I haven't looked but I wouldn't be surprised to find a Utube video of this process if you care to search. Good Luck!

If these are the sort of locks that allow you to insert a special pin and re-code the lock to use different keys, it is possible that the keys were not inserted properly when the locks were "programmed." Try inserting the key not quite all the way and turning it.

If these are NOT programmable locks, you may have debris in the keyhole. Can you insert the keys all the way in? If not, I would say something is blocking part of your key channel.

Sometimes keys are poorly cut. Try applying moderate tension, (that is, twist the key after you insert it part-way, as though you were unlocking the lock), and zipping the key in and out of the lock channel as you turn it.

Lastly, are you CERTAIN those are the right keys? Could someone have played a prank on you and switched them?

When I was in Law Enforcement, I was aware that burglars would sometimes switch keys when they had access to them: At parties, coat-check rooms, etc. Kwikset keys are everywhere and it would be easy to swap them so the owner wouldn't realize they had been switched. Sometimes repairmen called to the home would do this so they could return later and rob the place. Or worse.

I would swap those locks out ASAP if there is ANY possibility this could be the case. Your safety and your belongings are worth the cost and hassle.

Call the 800 number for Kwikset and they will send you a replacement but only the inside lock. That's the only solution to your problem.

I have just experienced the same problem. After 4 calls and an hour on hold, a warranty representative is going to send me replacement cylinders. I am not happy since 3 of the 4 locksets are already installed. My wife and daughter were locked out for 3 hours!!! Would not recommend this product!
