I have laptop (lenovo E260) this laptop has

Boot up the laptop and enter into your BIOS. You can do this by pressing F2 at startup. From there select the boot tab and rearrange the boot menu order placing the disc drive to be the first to boot from. Then save changes and exit. You can also select boot from external media (USB boot) and place it in the order you desire such as after CD but before hard drive. Then insert your recovery CD and upon boot it should prompt you to press any key to boot from CD.

The sound on both my old IBM laptops (T40 & X31) no longer work.

Try pressing the sound up button on the top of the keyborad. There are 3 buttons sound up, sound down and mute. It appears that the sound control on windows is independant of the buttons.

The left mouse button does not work on my IBM

Windows has the ability to swap mouse buttons, mainly for those who mouse left-handed. It looks to the right button for left button action. It seems that the actual left button is not functioning. A work-around is to use the right button as the left as you are now doing, AND, use the solid windows button (the one to the immediate left of the right control key) as the right button. Not as easy, but it works.

First off, check to make sure the sound is not muted. check the speaker icon next to the clock or the sound properties in control panel. If it is not muted then download this driver: http://www.soft32download.com/software/free-download-IBM-ThinkPad-R40-Audio-driver.html
