Disconnect the electric for the unit. Disconnect the two wires from the two eliments. Place a battery type test light or Ohm meter is more conclusive if you have one, Light should light when placing the two test leads to the two eliment contacts(while they are disconnect for the water heater wiring) should be dim but glowing. If no light the the eliment is open. If an Ohm meter the Wattage is written on the heater the heater. E=IR P=IE. It should work out to about 1200 -1400 ohms if 220 volt heater. If the light is bright just as if you had put the two test leads together,then you can say that the eliment is likely shorted. Either no light or a Very bright light requires the eliment to be changed.   To check the thermostats, Raise the ajustment one one at a time, until it clicks. Listen for the heater to be heating. Turn that one back down and do the other one the same way. I hope I have been clear enough. About one gallon of water should be drained for the bottom of the tank once a year along with checking the preasure/tempature safety relief valve by  operating it ,using the leaver,for  a few moments as preventive maintenance.

On a positive note, the PT valve (pressure/temperature relief valve) is supposed to pop off before the tank blows up. An electric water heater rarely lasts more than about 11 years under good conditions, so I think it would be wise to weigh the possibility of replacing the water heater. Newer ones have much better insulation which should save you in operating costs over the long run. In addition, if you fix it now, then something else goes bad, and it will, you will probably conclude replacement would have been the better option.

Absolutely no hot water indicates the top element or thermostat on the heater. Check to make sure that you have 240 volts on the top two terminals of the top thermostat. If you do then check the top element for voltage. It should also read 240 volts between the two screws. If you have 240 volts there shut off the power, drain the heater to a point below the top element and change the top element. When the element is installed turn your WATER back on and let the air bleed out of several hot faucets in the house. When the faucets stop spitting air you can turn them off. Check for leaks around the element. If you have no leaks turn the power back on the the heater and replace the covers.

That should get you 'back in hot water' in two hours.

Most water heaters have 2. They are behind a plate / cover, one near top front and one near bottom front. Be sure to cut breaker off before servicing.

taking it that you are talking about a hot water system (models mean nothing with out make and type of equipment) take the old element to a plumbers supply shop( hardware shops will not have the elements) and they will have a suitable replacement elements can be straight loops or be curved so that the follow the sides of the tank however with electric hot water systems , the leak is not always at the gasket but at the fitting behind the gasket which has corroded internally from electrolysis for the element recommend that as there is power involved that you get in an accredited plumber to check the system first because if the tank is leaking then a new gasket and element is a waste of cash

heating elements are resistors that get hot one end will have 115 volts but the other end should be considerable less because the resistance of the heating element drops the voltage if you used a ohm meter you should be reading a resistance of 500-1000 ohms for a good heater element but with your readings , there will be no resistance so the element is faulty

How are you getting 320 volts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ??????????? Impossible. Check out the element for continuity - if open replace.
