If it just needs cleaning, there are a few products that will dissolve the build up, remember, don't submerge the kettle in liquids. It will have to be done slowly, and take a little time, oh yeah, and effort :) If you contact the manufacture, they can recommend a cleaner to use. Hope that helps, and thank you.
You could have a loose or a burned wire connection at the switches. If there is more than one thing not working correctly unplug the unit and check the black wire from the lead in cord. It goes to the switches and jumps from one switch to the next. That's where I would look first?
