Use a cotton bud with alcohol to clean the runners that the cartridges travel on

most likely empty or defective.

Software glitch? Try disconnecting printer while it is turned on. Then press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Then replug printer and turn on. Any difference? If not, you have either something in there clogging up the mechanism or you have a bad sensor giving erroneous info.

Depends on the document. If there are images and the type is handwritten. First scan the type as OCR scan so it scans only the text, a new window should appear for editing...nothings perfect... Then scan the page with the images as a whole as doc file. Hope this helps, not all scanners are built the same, just have to read the instructions and features before buying.
