1991 BMW 5 Series "turbo diesel lack power" Questions

BMW X5 Diesel..When I accelerate hard I can hear a whistling,rasping sound and the car lacks power. Any advice greatly appreciated! had same problem, mine turned out to be a split turbo pipe.
