Panasonic DVD-CV47 Multi-disc DVD Player "reads init" Questions

My Philips DVDR5500 5 player is stuck in "init". I've read the manual and tried re-setting but it won't get past "IIT" on the display. Could be that it has lost the ability to read the disk in machine
