You didn't say what year or model bike you have or whether it's fuel injected or carburetor equipped. If it's equipped with a carburetor this condition is usually caused by warming the engine too long with the enricher on. The enricher provides a very rich mixture to start the engine with. I've seen people start their bikes and let them run for ten minutes with the enricher on. They foul a lot of plugs to. Use the enricher to start the bike but as quickly as you can get the bike to run without it, turn it off and use the throttle grip to keep the engine running until it will idle by itself. I use the throttle lock underneath the throttle housing.

89 Polaris Ranger500 6x6 side by sideis coughing, spitting and backfireing thew carb.whats the fix

I would start by pulling and cleaning the carb, air filter and spark plug. Usually the cause starts with dirty air filters that gets the carbs dirty which then cause the polaris to run rich and the plug will start to foul. The unburnt fuel ignites at the wrong time and back fires. A less likely problem would be out of timing.

Generally in a spark plug is 60000 kilometers, if fuel is bad need in early, remove the spark plug, such as for auburn or rust color, spark plug showed normal; Such as stained with oil, shows that the spark plug gap imbalance or too much oil, high tension line short circuit or open circuit; Such as black smoke, spark plug type cold wrong or mixture is thick, the oil is up; Such as the top between the electrode and sediment, when for the oily sediment, shows that the cylinder into the oil has nothing to do with the spark plug, when the black sediment, spark plug carbon deposition and bypass, when grey sediments, is a gasoline additive covered electrode lead to lack of fire; If serious erosion, such as the scar at the top, with black pattern, electrode melt, showed that the spark plug is damaged.

Engine diagnosis and causes for spark plugs carbon deposits

common causes of carbon deposit in spark plug:

1. blown head gasket.
2. faulty piston ring.
3. cracks/leaks in the cylinder head. this is quite serious.

possible solutions for number 3 are:
1. resurfacing of cylinder head
2. reboring of combustion chamber
3. resleeving/replacing of pistons.

2004 v twin 16 hp 500hours on it runs but spits fuel throught carb when giving gas runs like its missing on one cylinder replaced carb, plugs, fuel filter, it has 120 lbs of compression in each cylinder...

You should take one of the heads off and look at the valves. You may have deposits building up no the valves.

120 pounds compression sounds pretty good for a six year old engine with 500 hours on it. It probably started life at 9 to 1 and now is around 8 to 1.

I have a poulan 2150, won't stay running, why?

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Chain Saws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks
*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

No-start
Basics to check:
1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled (black and carbon deposits)
b) is there spark

2) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated
3) Check cylinder compression

Check HT leads, connection and the spark at the plug to see if it nice and bright.

Is the battery charged fully or is it old? They don't last very long on Harleys.

See if the regulator is any good ( dealer or friend swap if possible to check).
