I was advised by BMW to use castrol saf xo oil in the final drive and gear box of my 2010 r1200gs. I have since been advised that this recommendation has changed. Does anyone know why?

use motor oil or an engine oil for your engine, as long as it is with this sae or saf number as advise by manufacturer and use gear oil for your gear box with the same sae number as advised by manufacturer. you can use any brands you want as long as the numbers of oil matches.
First, you did read your owners manual right? The manual lists the BMW approved oils for your bike. It is also important to use the correct quantity of oil in the engine, this is listed in the manual too.
I use Castrol Syntec 20-50 for the engine and synthetic gear oil (90 weight) for the trans and final drive.
