1. Oil level is checked with the engine off and the bike on its center stand so that the oil level is even across the engine.

2. Without knowing the model and year of your bike, it's not possible to suggest the oil capacity for your engine. Some engines have the maximum oil capacity molded into the engine case near the oil filler; others do not.

3. Your fuel petcock is vacuum activated. When the engine is running, a small amount of vacuum keeps the fuel flowing when the petcock is set to "On" (main tank) or "reserve" (emergency dregs of the tank). "Prim" stands for "prime," which permits fuel to flow without the presence of engine vacuum. You'd use this if you ran the bike out of gas and needed to get fuel to the carbs so that the engine could be started again. You don't want to keep your petcock set to "prime" for very long when the bike is turned off (or even when it's on) so that the carbs can't overfill. In extreme cases, you can fill your crankcase with gasoline, which can lead to hydraulic lock and the potential for serious engine damage if you try to run your bike like that (I've had that happen to me).

4. Again, without knowing the year and model of your bike, I am not able to provide any information about the spark plugs used by your bike. However, if your bike has 18mm spark plugs, you'll need an 18mm deep socket to install and remove them. I recommend using a 6-point over a 12-point socket for this purpose--and spending the extra dollar or two to get a good quality, brand name socket. I have never seen an 18mm "spark plug" socket, but if you're really concerned, you can take the little rubber insulator out of an old spark plug socket and stuff it in an 18mm deep socket. I have never bothered.

Why would there be oil coming from the overflow tube on my 86 Suzuki gs450l

Hi Michael the problem with many older motorcycles is usually gas working its way from the fuel tank and dirty or worn carbs into the engine check your oil level and to see if it is overfull and smell it for fuel. Change the oil and refill to the proper level then you need to check your fuel system.
1. check to see if your fuel petcock is not flowing and the setting is on on or reserve. If it is still flowing then the vacuum diaphram needs replacing.
Position PRI is for when you run out of fuel and needed to prime refill the carbs to get the bike running then turn to reserve. hope i Explaned it clearly enough hope this helps.

Fuel petcock position depends entirely on what you're doing with your bike at the time.

In normal use, the fuel petcock should be set to the "on" position and left there. In that position, gasoline will be drawn from the tank only when the engine is running and generating vacuum. This prevents overfilling the carbs when the bike sits.

When you're riding the bike and it starts to sputter, it's time to move the petcock to the "reserve" position so that you can use the last few drops in the tank (on a 650 special, this was either .3 or .5 gallons--can't remember which off the top of my head) to nurse your bike to a gas station. Once you've filled the tank, move the petcock back to "on." The bike will still run fine if you keep the petcock in the reserve position, but when it starts to run low on gas--well, you won't have that emergency reserve to get yourself to the gas station.

If you've managed to run the bike out of gas completely, or if you are getting the bike ready for service after having drained the carbs for the winter, you'll need to move the petcock to the "prime" position for a few minutes. This by-passes the vacuum line cutoff mechanism and lets gasoline flow until the carb floats shut off the fuel valve (this is also how all older motorcycle fuel petcocks operated). A sticky float or poorly sealing float valve in the carb can, however, cause far too much gasoline to drain into the carbs (and into the crankcase, if you're particularly unlucky), which is why you should not leave the petcock in the prime position for an extended period of time.

Some Yamaha XS650 motorcycles (can't tell if that's the model you have) have a tank with two fuel petcocks, one on each side, to fuel each carb. If you have a tank with this setup, be aware that setting one fuel petcock to "prime" will affect both cylinders, as there's a crossover tube to equalize fuel levels between the carbs. Also, for reasons I could never figure out, on one XS650 I owned, moving either petcock to "prime" permitted fuel to flow on a gravity feed out of both petcocks simultaneously. I could never figure out exactly why it was doing that.

2. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.

How find out reserv or main at petrol tank

Do you have a petcock on the bottom of the gas tank? If so, if you have a "reserve" the petcock will have three positions, off, regular and reserve. If you only have a two position petcock you have no reserve function. Petcocks work by taking the gas in the petcock tube higher up in the gas level, once the gas level drop below a certain level on the gas tank pickup tube, the petcock has to be switched to reserve where the tube picks up gas at a lower level. Hope this is not too confusing.

Fuel tank spec. at 17L. Ran out of fuel, and filled it with 14L. Still had 3L of fuel. Why can't I get all the gas out of the tank? And what can I do to get the rest of the fuel? Why does the gas light go...

You do have a petcock on the left side w/ a mark for reserve right? When you run ot of fuel or getting close turn petcock to reserve....Good Luck to you friend....Tim
