I have a 1977 kawasaki 1000 police bike ,recently purchased, and am having a bear with the electrical setup. It turns over and started once however i found some loose wires and it looks as if someone has removed the igniter. I removed the igniter off a 1980 kz 1000 and i dont know where to hook up the black and yellow wire. The book on the 1980 says it goes to negative or ground is this so?

Where do I start, in principle it should be either electrical or fuel related, but there are so many variants in those 2 areas that it is almost impossible to answer your question without more information.
When was the bike last started? This is a good start!
you and many others are looking for this answer, but kawasaki do not keep paint codes for there older bikes ( i had a 79 z1000 )and had no luck from kawasaki via email phone calls etc, the only thing you can do is use a piece that is as good as new and get it matched from a good paint shop ,

Make a couple of calls to different Kawasaki dealers in your area. Ask what direction the flywheel is supposed to turn when the engine is running. Chances are the mechanic is seeing a directional arrow on the odd-lot flywheel when the correct flywheel has the arrow going the other direction. Put the bike on the centerstand. Start the engine and put it in first gear. The sprocket should be turning counter clockwise.
