Try taking the cable out from the gearbox end and the speedo end. check that when you turn one end of the inner cable the other end turns, if it doesnt then the cable is the problem. as you sound like a technical guy then i am sure you know that.

i would suspect that it is the gear that drives the cable in the gearbox. a rather wacky but effective way of testing this is to remove the cable fromt he speedo end. hold it in your hand and roll the bike down hill whilst looking at the free end of the cable, if the inner rotates then the chances are it is the speedo or the connection at the speedo. if it doesn't then the little plastic gear is not driving the cable so look down at that end. whilst not wishing to sound patronising, are you 100% sure that you have assembled the speedo drive mechanism. let me know how you get on.

I have a 95 grand marques the Speedo and odometer have stopped working I have already changed out the vss on the output shaft of the trans twice for the thought of possibly buying a junk sensor but to no...

Without a scan tool to confirm the BCM is getting good signal from the VSS, it's a risk. Since you've already replaced the VSS, it's time for a rebuilt cluster. DON'T buy a junyard unit. The rebuilt ones are fully refurbished and come with a warranty. Do a search for instrument cluster rebuilders.

Speedo works,odometer does not.any ideas.thx

I asked the porsche guy here, apparently there is a little plastic doohickey in the older cars that if you push the reset odometer button while the car is moving, the odometer breaks, only repair is to replace whole unit.

Speedo/Odo - cruise stopped working, directional not cancelling.

I am not sure if your bike has the VSS or not. The vehicle speed sensor. If so it could be the culprit. Hope this helps.

Speedometer not working

First you need go to your local parts store, buy a manual on this model pickup, and read it. The reading is to help you understand how things work together and help if you attempt the repair. Next, if the dash is electric, or digital it properly is a electric unit in that it will use a pulse type sensor to provide the speedo signal for speed input. 2. It a mechanical input if there is a cable that connect the speedo with the transmission towards the rear of the tranny, it usaully screws on it. The cable binds and breaks are most common problem, take the cable off at trans, take a drill and attach it to the cable, spin it up see if speed shown, if not then you the cable good if not broken, and there a problem in the speedo itself. If so, either get it rebuilt or by new unit. If its the electric unit, and the dash does turn on, verify by other gauge working, if so check the sensor that provides the signal.

Speedo & miles not working on my clocks

Possible defective speedo needle stepper motor. This is the little electric motor that moves the speedo needle and turns the mileage counter.
