Take the master cylinder off the bike. There is a snap ring in the plunger bore of the master cylinder. Take the pieces out of the master cylinder and place them in a line in the order and direction that they came out. Hone or clean the bore of the master cylinder out and install the new parts back in the same way the old parts came out. It's not that difficult. There is one part, a valve, that goes in your master cylinder because you have a drum brake on the rear. If you had a later model with a disc brake, you would leave this part out. Both master cylinders leak fluid

This is unusual as I ride a 1994 model and have yet to have to rebuild the master cylinders. But, if they are leaking, it's time for a rebuild. You can buy the rebuild kits either through Harley or aftermarket. Simply disassemble the master cylinders, lightly hone the bores with a flex hone, and install the new kit. Make sure you use the correct type of brake fluid and do not mix different types of fluid. This may be what is wrong with your master cylinders now, mixed brake fluid. If it looks like someone blew their nose in your master cylinders, that's what happened. In this case, once you get the master cylinders rebuilt, you need the bleed the system throughly to clean out the calipers and hose as well.

I have to pump my rear brakes to get them to work it an 02 flstfi fatboy

brake fluid should be changed a least once a year so check to see what type of fluid you need and bleed the system i myself use a mini-vac for this. make sure you do this several times and push your brake pedal slowly to get pressure do not pump, this creates little air bubbles.only crack the bleed screw enough for the fluid to pass thru. If this does not cure your problem you may need a new master cyclinder and or rebuild kit for the calitper good luck
