I have a 1996 yamaha xv 535H and the clutch stopped working I ordered\r\nnew friction discs and compression springs and a new clutch cable and installed them. But, the clutch still does not work, the bike dies when put into gear, i tried disconnecting the kickstand switch but that didnt work either, could the problem be the long pushrod? the bike only has 10,000 miles on it. any suggestions?

SOURCE: clutch will not disingage when i pull the lever .

Sounds like it is not adjusted properly, or you have the clutch misaligned. You can check for proper operation with the bike off, and the clutch cover off while pulling the clutch lever. Should be able to see it move 1/4-3/8 of an inch.

If you can see the actuator moving, but not disengaging the clutch, it usually means that the clutches are hanging up in the basket, or the actuator is bad and not releasing the clutches. The only way to tell is to take off the clutch cover and watch what happens when you pull the clutch.

SOURCE: My 85 Yamaha Maxim's kickstand killswitch is

Have you priced a new killswitch at your Yamaha shop. I doubt they are that expensive and it is definitely better to have it then to bypass it. With that said, all it is doing is completing a circuit. when the kickstand is up and the pin is pushed up it completes the circuit allowing spark. When it is down the circuit isn't complete . Find the two wires and tie them together and you should be able to run it.

But do it the safe way.

Why is my clutch slipping

Without knowing all the variables here. How old is the clutch that is in the bike now? It may just be worn out, and need new fiber plates and discs put in it. Are all of the clutch springs the correct ones, or if they are old, might be time to replace them. When its slipping, what kind of riding are you doing ? in mud, sand, or on hard ground ? What size engine and bike do you have ? Is your clutch cable and adjuster the stock and correct pieces for your bike ? or aftermarket ? Have you had the clutch apart recently, and do you know for sure that you put it back together correctly ? ( See Service Manual ). Lots of variables to consider... without knowing, you might consider these things I have mentioned. Thanks.. Hopefully these will get you going again.

Clutch not disengaging

Slippage
  • Slippage is a clutch problem that occurs when the pressure plate is unable to hold the friction disc against the flywheel tightly when the clutch is engaged. This causes the disc to rotate at a different speed than the flywheel. The high temperature caused by friction against the disc will eventually damage the clutch plate and necessitate a replacement. On clutches with mechanical linkage, adjustment can forestall replacement for a time.
If you notice the engine revving abnormally as the clutch is released, and the car accelerates gradually, then it could be a slippage problem. It's possible that grease or oil on the disc is causing the slippage or the engine mount could be broken, causing the linkage to be bound up by an improperly moving engine.
Another common cause of slippage is when the friction plate is simply worn out from use. A clutch will not last forever, and over time the clutch will begin slipping. Adjustments will not fix this problem, as a worn out friction plate will require complete replacement.
Vibration
  • A grabbing or chattering clutch is an indicator that there is a problem inside the clutch mechanism. It is an easily noticed problem. Symptoms include a vibration or jerking as the clutch is released, especially when accelerating from a stop. This problem may be the result of a damaged or broken disc, flywheel or pressure plate. It may also be caused by loose springs or worn engine mounts, according to the Integrated Publishing website on Clutch Troubleshooting.

When i am in 3rd or higher gear and accelerate i can feel the clutch slipping. could it be the type of oil like i herd or is the clutch bad

If it's the original 1996 clutch I'd be surprised if it wasn't slipping. If the clutch & clutch springs are actually still good & working properly, make sure the oil you're using doesn't contain any "friction modifiers". AMSOIL & other companies make synthetic lubricants without friction modifiers. If your oil or an oil additive has friction modifiers, just drain the crankcase and replace the oil with the proper stuff and that may well cure the problem. Replace the filter too.

Clutch slipping.

only use motorcycle oil, if it has a wet clutch, car oils have friction modifiers that can affect clutches
