Onan 4000 Backfires when shutting down

I wouldn't panic about it. I would only be concerned if it was backfiring while it's running.
When the engine is shut off the momentum spins the engine around a couple of times and hot spots in the exhaust ignite the raw fuel.
Cleaning the carbon out of the exhaust may help.

Shut down engine

Most engines hav an anti backfire valve solenoid screwed under the carb bowl. This sometimes sticks due to ethanol gas. When you turn off the ignition, it closes the valve to let the engin run out of fuel. If it sticks closed the engine will not start. Sticken open, the engine will not shut down. It has a single wire going to it. When you turn on the key, you should get power to the solenoid. If you have power to it, then remove the solenoid and clean the needle valve and carb opening. Would be a good time to clean carb also. A good carb cleaner works well. Ethenaol added gas is a real culprit to carbs nowadays.

I have gas leaking from a hose that is protruding from the bottom of my 1998 Suzuki Savage 650 LS. It is backfiring a lot and I was told this was due to the Jardine exhaust system that is installed. ...

do u mean gas as in petrol??if it is petrol...then its leaking from the this id the overflow pipe!!..if thats the case..then it sounds like the carbs may need cleaning. as they may be some muck in there thats stoping the floats from shuting.(carnt shut so overflows!!) this could make the bike backfire as still petrol going to engine when carbs shut so backsfire..or the back fire could be from the new exhaust .if its not seal'ed right on the manifolds it sucks air in & can make them pop & backfire when you shut the throttle(like when u shut throttle when coming up to a stop)....hope this helps...Howard
