HI Luann:
I'd pull the spark plug(s) and clean and dry them, then check for spark.
It's possible they got wet with fuel when the start with kill switch on was tried.
Could be a bad kill switch. See if it is grounded out. Disconnect the kill switch and see if it will start. Be ready to reconnect it to shut it off! "Safety First"
If it doesn't fire right up do not keep trying you will burn up the starter Change something 1.Fuel on 2 kill switch to run 3 side stand up 4 petcock in prime position if it has one 5 Spark? 6 choke on? 7 check the spark plug to see if it smells like gas or is wet with fuel 20 seconds at a time on the starter or it will burn out
with ignition on try a turn signal for they are the ground connection, if they work switch your system relay and starter relay, this is a quick way to test if the relay is bad
Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
Check the fuses.
Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires?
Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing.
If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.
Initially, try with the sidestand folded up and / or the clutch lever pulled in. Likewise determine if there is a clicking sound when the start button is pressed:
if there is a clicking sound, locate the starter relay. Follow the big cable from the battery's + terminal; it would end in nother terminal of the starter relay:
turn ignition ON and kill switch to RUN;
short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay. Expect a big start. If the starter spins, startr relay is faulty.
if there is no click, then the safety interlocks are preventing the relay from engaging. Check the neutral switch/wire and sidestand switch/wire.
It is of course assumed that the battery is fully charged and that the battery cablles/connectors are clen and tight. Postback result(s) of tests.
If lights dim when trying to start,Battery is to weak(may have 12 volts but not enough amps)
Bike dieing when removing power from jumper says the lighting coil on the stator plate is bad and this could also have killed the voltage regulator,Which would kill the battery by over charging it. Hesitation and carbon smell could be from a non firing cylinder.
So,Take the battery and have it load tested (free at most auto part stores)
Check for power from the lighting coil on the stator
Replace the voltage regulator.
