did you leave lights or key turned to on position or the battery didn't have a good charge when you parked it. Did you kick start the engine? Bike may need a tune-up.

I would pull the spark plug, put marvel mystery oil, or 2 stroke oil, something light...then rock the bike and shift until you think you are in
5th gear then push the bike to see if the engine will turn over.
This problem may have many reason but you can try one of the solutions, when suddenly engine stops and kick rod is going smooth without resistance try push and start by directly in 2nd gear or 1st gear and after it starts keep the engine running by giving small revs for a min....

WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..
I would suspect two things ... thing one ... are you sure the '82 has a safety interlock switch? Thing two ... if it does have a switch, check it for proper operation.

some bikes will let you start with the stand down, as long as the clutch is in, same with it in gear.
some bikes wont let it start at all in gear, or with the stand down.

first drain the carby, then set your air mixture screw 2 turns out, from the fully turned in position. The starting proceedure is as follows, when the engine is COLD, turn on fuel, pull on the choke fully, and kick the engine over. DO NOT use any throttle, when the engine is cold, and the choke is on. Remember Choke on, NO throttle. When warm, no choke, and a little throttle when kicking.
Check that the clutch is in, kick stand up, and neutral light ablaze. Then try your start button. When you had it running and hit the button, the starter engaged at a slower speed then the bike engine was turning, which led to the stall. The stall means your starter works. If the starter works when the engine is running then it is wiring. Check your kick stand wiring along with the clutch wires which plug in on the handlle bar or where the clutch cable enters the engine.
Yes, it does have an automatic decompression mechanism. It is a centrifugally operated mechanism and it is EXTREMELY unlikely that is causing your problems. The two highest probabilities are: 1. Fouled spark plug. Forget what it looks like, put a BRAND NEW plug in. It is the cheapest form of diagnosis you can do. These bikes are terrible about fouling spark plugs and a fouled plug produces the exact symptoms you described. 2. Inspect your valve clearance. Tight valves will also make the bike hard/impossible to start with the kick starter. In some cases, it can be push started, but still won't kick. With tight valves, the bike, although hard starting, will run pretty good, for awhile. Eventually it will burn the valves and quit running though. If your bike isn't kick starting fairly easily, something is wrong and needs to be addressed. The only other issue is making sure the idle speed is set per the service manual. These bikes have a fairly high idle, some as high as 1700 rpms. If it is set too low, it makes them hard to start too.
With the engine off, put it in gear and pull the clutch lever. If the bike rocks freely back and forth, the clutch is releasing correctly and eliminates mechanical problems. The only possible electrical problem would be a wiring fault involving a gear position indicator (if the bike has such a thing). If it does have such an indicator, find the switch (on either side of the transmission case) and disconnect the wiring (plug?) Try the bike again. If it now keeps running, I'd suspect some form of cross wiring short within the wiring harness. If it does not run at all, then the bike probably won't start and run except in neutral--hook up the switch again. Did this problem start suddenly, or after a repair of some sort???
