I have a Yamaha VX 535 Virago, 1996 model. It has developed an issue at low speed: high pitched, metallic noise, coming from the engine. If I hit the engine kill switch and wait a few moments the bike will re-start and seems to run fine. The bike has been recently serviced, new plugs filters and oil etc...so this is baffling. Any suggestions as to how to rectify this would be much appreciated. Many thanks

If it is possible to start at all. Fresh fuel fresh engine oil good battery. You may have the following problems; Corroded and blocked carburetor fuel system, bad wire connections piston ring set up.... I hope it was kept indoors and the fuel was drained out before it was left sitting. Good luck, they are nice bikes.

SOURCE: yamaha virago 535 not charging on new battery and

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Charging problems could either be a stator issue or a failed rectifier/regulator combo. To check:

  • measure the battery voltage with the engine off;
  • start the bike and measure it again, it should be slightly higher;
  • rev the bike, the voltage should rise as the RPM increases;
  • measure the voltage by pairs on the 3 white wires from the stator;
  • there should be AC voltage that increases as the RPM ncreases.
This of course presumes that the wiring, connectors, terminals have been checked, cleaned and tightened.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
